Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
The thing with Scottie's defense is that he's guarding multiple spots against the very best players in the league. They aren't sheltering him or giving him the easy assignments. He's guarding the KDs, Tatums, Middletons of the league.
They could give him easier defensive assignments, maybe that boosts his defensive numbers, but this year isn't about winning an award, it's about developing him into a great player. So far, so good.

It would be a shame if the league shuts down man, I'd be pretty upset not having to see his development but I get it for the betterment of everyone.

Don't think this has been posted yet, it's from early in the season, but it's Coach Thorpe on a podcast.
Everybody is losing their freaking minds. Nutbars and wingnuts have infested this forum. We've become a public lavatory without cleaning staff.

How many Masai is a fraud threads would we have if Raptors had drafted Suggs? Meaning Scottie was still on the board and would be doing this for another team in the NBA

don't think he has actually yet, at least not according to TPA.
His offense is just much better than from any other rookie.
In recent games he has been a positive defensively. Only reason the TPA doesn’t reflect that is cause it’s being weighed down by the earlier games
If he continues the way he’s been recently, the TPA will eventually reflect it too
I have no doubt that it will be.

many because it's all result orientated. How Masai got to Barnes, why he drafted him or how actually he viewed him pre draft doesn't matter now.
There could have been no bad signs with Suggs and it wouldn't matter if he is a bust.
Masai is a very good GM but some things are just out of anyone's control or knowledge. The Rockets probably also already have buyers remorse passing on Mobley and Barnes.

Essentially Scottie is as good as Mobley
Likely better - Mobley is getting much more sheltered offensively with much less responsibility and much more opportunity to be efficient on that end.

Tbh, other leagues are looking into it and at this rate you never know with the cases going up like crazy. It wouldn't surprise me if it goes either way, lockout or not.

Not really. If it does happen, Barnes would lock himself up in a gym.

Exactly. He chooses to go after the best offensive players defensively. If he was capable of putting up stellar defensive numbers with the covers he takes, then he would be in the DPOY conversation.
I also liked seeing him go at Durant and other good offensive players when he is covering them. Tire them out on D, maybe get them in foul trouble(Refs wouldn't do KD like that, but other players). Another smart thing Scottie does.

Lol TPA is terrible..the defensive aspect of it is just an variation of an extrapolated DBPM stat. This is why TPA generally has guys like WB showing better defense than guys like Thybulle..
DBPM is okay to look at sometimes, but it will never tell you the full story and will be super box score biased.
It's very hard to measure rookies empirically unless they are rim protecting bigs. Scottie is a bit of everything right now on the defensive end.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
Saw him play live last Monday. He's so confident and composed. With good habits, he can be a top-10 player with his size and skillset.
OTOH, Champagnie and Banton were unfocused and looking like a couple of teenage smatasses during warmups. They were engaged when their numbers were called.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
I'm honestly curious to see what the Raptors big board looked like heading into the draft. Would anyone be surprised if it was:
1. Evan Mobley
2. Scottie Barnes
3. Cade Cunningham
4. Josh Giddey
5. Franz Wagner
6. Jonathan Kuminga
7. Jalen Green
8. Jalen Suggs
We'll likely never know, but I'm always curious.

it was reported and clear the Raps were high on Mobley at #4, but that was when it was already known Detroit was taking Cade #1. it wouldn't shock me if we had Cade #1 or #2 ahead of Scottie, though Masai does tend to draft length/projects
I think your list is giving Masai a little too much credit as it's basically the correct order a few months into the season. all we know for sure is they were right on Scottie/Mobley
would love to know who the Raps wouldve taken if Scottie was off the board as Green doesn't really fit the Raps prototype. can you imagine what would've happened to this forum if we passed on Suggs AND Green for someone like Kuminga?

Well at this point you could make a pretty strong case for Wagner over Giddey and Cade, but yeah I see where you're coming from. We know that Thorpe had it Mobley #1 and Scottie #2, so I wouldn't be surprised if our FO had it the same. We know that they were actively scouting Giddey, so I don't think it's a reach to say that he was likely in their top 5. I think there's a good chance that if we were picking 5th (I know we couldn't have) that we would have taken Giddey over Suggs if they were both still on the board.

yea I think youre right. there were rumours the Raps werent high on Suggs to begin with and Im not surprised. he doesnt really sync up with what we know the Raps value (no knock on Suggs)
as much as the Raps always make the "sexy" pick and dont always align with the media draft boards, I still think someone like Cade would be high on their board. and yea in the end I agree that we probably still had Mobley/Scottie ahead of him
what a blessing & crazy chain of events that led to Scottie being a Raptor. the injuries last year, Tampa, Masai sitting out Kyle, lucking out in the lottery. the last time something like this happened we got Poetle. its crazy what a difference a deep draft class can make in a teams trajectory

Wouldn't be surprised if they had scottie ranked ahead of Mobley, thanks to Scottie having primary ballhandler skills. Too much 2-way upside with scottie.

Doubt it. Mobley fit like a glove and his transition from College to the NBA was seamless. Everyone in TwO/draft circles knew he was going to be great and arguably had the highest ceiling. It's just no one thought he'd show out this way in year one. But Scottie has been the biggest surprise out of the draft. No one saw this coming, not even Masai I don't think.
Scottie is an anomaly of sorts.
