Re: The answer to all our problems... JEREMY LIN
He actually looks better this year, though a lot of it must be from being healthier and not having so much defensive attention on him like in New York. He doesn't look as clumsy when pressured (though he does cough up some awful turnovers once in a while), and obviously his shooting has improved a lot.

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Say what you will about the Raptors, but has there been a team that's been managed worse than the Knicks in the 21st century?

Where does the cash payment came from?
That's where I don't get it.
Salary of 5/5/15 = 8.3/8.3/8.3
Nyk will take a huge hit in the last year on the cap because of the matching
However, if Lin is getting cash payments, he will be earning more than 25 mil total.
Here's a little something something, question #44, and #88
http://Www.cbafaq.com
He gets a check for 5/5/15 to deposit into his bank account, regardless of whether whether the Knicks match or not or whatever team he gets traded to.
When a team tallies up their team salary to see if they're under the cap, or if they have free cap space to make moves, or if they're trying to equalize salaries between 2 teams during trade negotiations, or to figure out how much luxury tax they need to pay, they use the CAP HIT.
So if the Knicks matched, the cap hit and the actual money paid to Lin would be identical.
But since the Knicks didn't match, the Rockets (and any team who subsequently trades for Lin's contract, including the Knicks) would use the cap hits of 8.3/8.3/8.3.
That means, for accounting and book keeping purposes for calculating salary cap usage, you treat Lin as if you're paying him 8.3 every year. But the actual money you have to give him for his paycheck is 5/5/15.
This doesn't involve the $3M annual "cash" allotment that teams can use in trades annually.
So the first two years, you pay him 5M, but you write down in your team salary cap accounting books that you're paying him 8.3M. The last year, you pay him 15M, but you write down in your team salary cap accounting books that you're paying him 8.3M. If you need to trade him, you use the 8.3M number for salary matching in trades. When calculating luxury tax, you use 8.3M.
If the Knicks had matched, then there would be no 8.3M, the exact numbers of 5/5/15 would be used.
