Legally he has done nothing wrong especially in the USA with there 1st amendment rights.
But the timing is terrible the NBA negotiating a new TV contract, well over 80% of players black and the middle of the playoffs.
That doesn't mean the NBA can't and shouldn't react they have a number of options.
#1 suspend him from daily involvement with the team
#2 bar him from Clippers games
#3 I'm sure somewhere in the franchise bylaws the league has the ability to take over ownership of the team like they did with New Orleans. Either buy Stirling our or force a sale. Believe the Dodgers ownership would buy it. Plus Magic is a partial owner some irony there.

I might get some heat for this, but listening to that just made me feel sorry for the guy.
It's no secret he's seen as a racist, but that's his problem. That's on him.
His gf was simply setting him up, so she could be in the news.

Exactly. There's nothing they can do and he's done a lot worse in the past. If they could do anything, they'd have done it by now.
The Clipper players are in the same boat as this girlfriend. They knew already what kind of a racist **** their boss is. He's embarrassed them in the past with racist crap. Because this comes out during the playoffs, they're extra outraged and going to sit out the game? Come on. You were fine playing for him yesterday after he calls blacks the n-word, makes fun of Mexicans and acts like a mob villain, but today it's too much? Please. If you were so offended, you'd ask for a trade or sign elsewhere when you had the chance.

Re: Donald Sterling Still a Racist?
Both Sterling and his girlfriend are disgusting people. They should ban him from being around the team and from going to games. If they can take the team away from him or force him to sell then they should do that too.
It sad and ridiculous that not only a guy like this owns an NBA team in this day and age but also obviously has a circle of probably rich and powerful friends that share the same views.

It was just discussed on TNT at halftime, but nothing new other than that the Clippers players today had a meeting. Everything qualified with, "if that was his voice" which could be tough to prove. Chuck cited the lawsuit Sterling settled years ago and called it habitual behaviour.

+1. I think the right course of action is large fine + suspend from day to day operations (I think Doc is actually president of basketball operations). You can't force some to sell ownership. But he definitely needs to take backseat. He is also getting divorced, and probably will need to sell the team as part of that. Within 5 years he is either going to be dead or forced out through that.
Secondly, of all the thing he has done this is not even the worst thing. Sterling was known racist before, and IMO this call is no that shocking. I'm surprised he was not yelling **** every other word. The type of racism he espouses is probably very common in that elite circle. Sterling is just too stupid to hide it. The jist of this racism is you don't want to be associated with minorities (being owner/employer doesn't count).

The thing is, swearing (Masai), gay slurs (Kobe, Noah) aren't illegal, but they're dealt with swiftly. Yes in the past Sterling's antics were swept under the rug, perhaps with a 'well it's not illegal so what can we do' shrug (and a stern convo with Stern about Sterling keeping his racist yap shut), but there's an influx of new generation of owners coming into the league, the NBA is clear about being inclusive, and Silver wants to put his own stamp on the league - all reasons that point to a turn in the tide against staying silent about this. It's not technically illegal, but there's still precedent for the NBA acting on other inappropriate matters. The time has come for this to be dealt with just as swiftly.

Cannot believe this! Is this guy normal? I mean he EARNS his money through this franchise. How stupid you can be to play for Clippers after this? I cannot see this settles without huge repercussions.
Lets see who we can afford to bring from this team.

Not only is he racist, but doesn't sound very intelligent either from listening to that conversation. I suppose one could be a bi-product of the other.

Re: Donald Sterling Still a Racist?
I have a strong feeling Silver will get him to sell the team. This is just too much.
While it's hard to judge things by surface features, I thought it was interesting Sterling's tone of voice was so insecure and depressive, instead of your classic arrogant angry racist. Sterling came off as a guy who could hate himself for being racist and see it as an incurable "sickness" inside him. The same way a pedo sees his own affliction

That's quite the assertion.
How do you know she didn't have problems with his racism while they were together? Because she didn't leave?
People stay in horrible relationships all the time. It's not as easy as some people think to just remove yourself from something like that, and having a dynamic where there's a huge disparity in wealth, and some financial support clearly going on, doesn't exactly make it any easier.
It might seem easy to just leave from a rational perspective, but if I've learned anything, it's that relationships are inherently irrational. Some people think they can change, or "save" the people they're with, or they hope their partner's immature/childish behaviour will eventually correct itself, and they're willing to put up with, or overlook their partner's shortcomings, no matter how absurd it seems from any rational observation.
People have arrangements and dynamics that work for them until they don't, and what works for some might not work for others. My morals are my own, and I'm not about to impose them on others, so I personally don't get why people are focused on the dynamic between Sterling and his girlfriend when it's clear the issue is that Sterling is a giant racist, and this woman did the world a huge favour by exposing what was, up until this point, only tacitly implied.

And you're reducing their relationship, which they mutually entered into, to a statement about her singular objectives.
Do you understand why this is a problem?

IIRC Kobe and Noah were in uniform when they used Gay slurs, and Masai was repping the team in front of thousands- they would still need to adhere to a code of conduct. This was a private-ish conversation, recorded on audio only, so it's not even 100% it was him. I think he would need to admit to it, for starters. You may be able to record racist things said between players and wives/GFs/friends every day and I'm not sure it would go anywhere beyond shame, and Silver doesn't work for those guys. He works for Sterling, as Stern did. This is tricky.
