It's kinda odd how strong the nationalism is in US, the pressure to conform to other people's identity and forget one's own. It's just obnoxious. You can see that embodied not only in Mark Jones tweets here, but also in Ted Cruz's renouncing his Canadian citizenship. That is probably one of the most significant diferences between Canada and US. I don't think we really have such obnoxious nationalism in Canada.
Having multiple identities is not considered a bad thing here. If anything Canada prides itself in its multiple identities, it's multiculturalism, recognizing that there are not discrete, objective boundaries between cultures, and that cultures did not develop in isolation of one another, and therefore each culture is itself a combination of other cultures. So there no question in Canada about whether an immigrant should renounce their roots, because it is all part of what defines Canadian identity regardless. Because you can't reasonably expect immigrants to assimilate into their host culture if you don't allow them to contribute to that culure.
