It's not just racism. It's flat out a misunderstanding of what defense actually is. We just watched a finals where one team had Kevin Love, Duncan Robinson, Max Struss, Gabe Vincent, and old GROAT in their top 8 guys. And their big injury was Tyler Herro. They went up against a team that ran top 8 guys notes for their defense like Jokic, Murray, Jeff Green and Chistian Braun. Turns out defense is more than just the ability to physically smother guys one-on-one. GD won't ever be OG on defense but that doesn't mean he can't be a good defender or even a part of an improved defense.

Also, defense and offense are more interrelated than is often believed. The Raps were really bad at making shots, be it 3s or just in general last season and they buoyed their offense by grabbing o-boards. Not having to crash the offensive glass because the first shot went in doesn't make the offense better from a numbers standpoint but it can make the defense better when guys get back and aren't as winded and the opposing team can't attack the unset defense.

The Raps paid for their offense rebounds by being horrible on the defensive glass last season. GD is also pretty good on the defensive glass and if they don't have to crash the offensive glass so much to score, their defense and defensive rebounding can benefit too.

Still racism tho because no one actually watches enough college basetball to know theres like 900 teams. Thats why I never pretend I know anything about the draft and mostly trust masia and bobby since they have a good track record. watching 10 mins of youtube videos and arguing your guy is better and you know more then guys whos jobs it is to scout them all year....

Anyone who thinks they know better then an nba scout is so cringe (especially in canada who watches us college basketball in canada?) unfortunately that means i get my draft news from media who are also usually wrong so I just dont sweat it and enjoy seeing any rookie play. I like shooters the most I miss seeing prime lowry and that one curry like season of fred drain 3's

Some FOs are worse than RealGM posters at scouting. But our FO is legitimately good at it.

The suit choice tells me he loves being in the spotlight and doesn't give a **** about negative comments. If he can back this confidence with his play, he could be a keeper.

Based on the small sample size that I've seen, kid's got decent athleticism, good length (insert dick joke), good off ball IQ, and obviously he can shoot.

I just can't put a finger on what his ceiling could be.

Luke Kennard wishes he was 6'8.

When your 6'8 with a 34" vert that is not limited. You don't need to be a Skywalker when you're 6'8

Not a fan of the pick but I get it. His shooting will undoubtedly translate but IMO he's going to be a liability defensively and won't be able to stay on the court in high leverage minutes because of that. Scheme and effort go a long way but his build is way too light and narrow for him to even be average. Don't even think he reaches Duncan Robinson level of physicality the way he's built. Someone like Wieskamp is also 6'7+ and has a 6'11 wingspan but just looks overwhelmed on the defensive end.

Raptors lacked shooting but even more important than that was the lack of self-creation. FVV and Siakam pounding the ball was in part due to them being the only guys capable of initiating any kind of offense. Barnes can't shoot and doesn't apply rim pressure off the bounce, works best as a secondary playmaker. OG's struggles in self-creation are well known, GTJ and the rest of our guys are play finishers who can't initiate. We need players who can initiate offense and apply rim pressure off the dribble more than anything. The team probably concluded that Bukfin wasn't going to fill that role well enough to justify taking over Dick but the need is still there.

Love the pick, we got a guy that was mocked in the top5 for almost the entirety of his 1 freshman szn in college.
We got arguably the best shooter in the draft at pick 13
We took the BPA

What's not to love ?

People overrate athleticism every draft. Give me a skilled player with moderate athleticism over an athletic freak any day. Low-skill athletes are busts waiting to happen. Developing basketball skills isn't easy.

The vertical doesn’t mean much when you get up that slowly.

This man’s arse and legs muscles needs to get much bigger.

Yeah, obviously. But you can say that about most prospects. Few 19 year-olds enter the NBA with NBA bodies. Adding muscle is way easier than developing skill.

He’s definitely “toolsie”

He reminds me of those almost 5 tool stud baseball prospects. Like he’s got all the tools and athleticism in the world, buuuuuut he strikes out 40% of the time.

Like what’s the adjustment the kid needs to make no clue. Otherwise, I would have called up dalton pompey ten years ago and told him to keep his wrists in.

Like there’s a lot of tools and the profile checks off a lot of boxes.

But there’s something off about him that I can’t put my finger on yet.

C Court wrote:Solid pick. His athleticism surprised me in the TikTok video. Not sure many 6’7” NBA players can nail back flips and cartwheels.

Let’s see what he looks like on the court with the Raps.

I haven't seen these videos, actually all I saw was him dunking in warmup and I was unimpressed --- a 6'7 guy who could barely get the ball over the rim didn't scream athletic to me. Can you link the video?

not even close it just feels like it sometimes. if you have 1000 posters claiming 1000 things they are always gonna seem better then front offices because the correct things that run out right get noticed due to selection bias. but I would wager the % of back takes is higher then the average nba office by quite a bit.

but buried in threads no one goes back to is insanely bad takes that far outweigh the average nba scout. look up on selection/survival bias only the posters who were right are going to be like LOL I WAS RIGHT LOOK AT MY THREAD FROM LAST YEAR. someone who was wrong is not going to do that...

Love it. Feels like a solid floor, decent ceiling type pick at 13.

Legit 6'7 swingman who shot 40% from 3 at 19 on one of the best college teams in the country. If he can become a passable defender (big if), he's going to be a solid starter for years. Didn't think he'd be there at 13.
