Although we have free agent guards coming up soon (Fred, Kyle, Norm), we are stacked at that position. Since there probably wouldn't be playing time available on our team, we'd have to send them to the G league for a season or two to let them play. Is it really worth spending a first on a guard?

If you mean PG, there are only two I would take at 28: Terry and Lewis, and maybe Flynn, though I'd be more inclined to acquire an early second to get Flynn and take a big or wing at 28.

Pretty much. Terry if you truly believe in his shooting. But I like Kira more.

Yeah, Kira for me as well. Terry gives me Tyler Harvey vibes, so I'd rather just sign/trade for Harvey and use the pick on someone else.

I like Kira as well but I think you guys are short changing Terry. He's a special shooter, at all three levels, but he also has such a high IQ and underrated vision. His shot selection is advanced and he can play within a system.

Harvey is interesting but Memphis isn't just going to give him away, and Terry's numbers in his Freshman year, in a major conference blow Harvey's away. I think Terry's floor is at least as a Seth Curry type, and on the high end, who knows, Steph, Trae, Nash, Price? Something in that archetype.

You don't have to like Hughes, but to say we don't need a scoring wing and then to big up Watson like he's done something is crazy.

Cole Anthony put up 18.5 ppg as a freshman in the ACC and I think he's going to be mediocre like Colin Sexton and Darius Garland. :D

Maybe so, and yet all the players you mentioned are better than, and will have better careers than Paul Watson

Does anyone think Mamadi Diakite will be available with our second pick?

He could develop into a solid role player

I've seen him projected to go as a late second rounder in most mock drafts, I think I saw him as high as a late first in one of the mock drafts. Looks pretty raw offensively, but defensively he looks solid, and looks like he has decent range. The thing I like is that he got better every year in college. He's also a SR and won the tournament with Virginia in 2019, so he would come with more experience than most.

I think if you look at it by ball-handlers and not gaurds we aren't stacked there at all. Really we just have one elite one in Lowry(who’s 34) and a good one in Fred whos also a free agent. Norm doesn’t do much in the way of ball handling or playmaking and TD is a wild card at the moment. Raptors like to play with multiple ballhandlers too (hence starting Fred and kinda of forcing Mccaw into that role)

So if there’s a ballhander our FO deems worth drafting it makes alot of sense to me. Especially since most of them just seem like straight up better prospects than the wings/bigs in this class.

Would also say that not contributing on elite teams as a rookie is the norm and really shouldn’t dissuade us from drafting the best talent possible especially when we have probably the best player development system in the league

If we strike out on both of Reed and Tillman, I think we should go after a guard with the 1st and look at Diakite. I’m a big fan of his actually, love his ability to defend the rim and hit 3s.

I guess it does not have to be a guard to do ball handling duty. Siakam is basically doing that.
I think the reason we want to draft a guard: quicker than a wing
And the reason we want to draft a wing over guard: can finish in traffic, can defend multiple positions

We expect both guard or wing position to be capable of improving their shooting and ball handling.

I mentioned before that I don't see us drafting a pg at 28 cause it's a deep position in this draft and I'm almost certain we resign Fred so it's not as important. I'd only consider it if one were to drop but it seems unlikely that that happens.
If we weren't keeping fred I'd been down for taking Dotson as a good replacement but currently I just don't see how we manage to fit a small pg in rotation with how small we already play.

Looking at it in the way you mentioned about just simply needing a ball-handler I think that's true and is probably why Bolmaro makes sense

How would you guys feel about this draft haul.

Current Scenario:
28) Bane
58) Diakite

Extra pick scenario:
28) Tillman
??) Bane
58) Butler/Ayayi

Cool with either. I'd be cool with Bane and Fitts, both of which can finish at the rim, run the break and have shot over 40% from 3 the last 2 (3 for Bane) seasons.

Came across a nice article about Terence Davis' fit on the Raptors from July 22, 2019!

https://www.raptorshq.com/2019/7/22/20702738/nba-analysis-toronto-raptors-terence-davis-fit

I was thinking if they would continue to look for DHO players (shoot the 3 so defender can't go under the screen, able to read the defense and make the extra pass should a double slide over, mid-range in case the defense packs the paint and finish at the rim strong before the defender can rotate). I think Bane and Fitts are well-rounded enough to do those things.

Another thing is that they are both seniors with a lot of experience and humbled by staying all 4 years.

I was watching some Fitts video last night strangely enough. I like his shot and shot off the dribble, but his attacking the rim is kind of awkward like OG. He doesn't seem to have great lift but like OG he has good length so that helps.

I enamoured by Bane's shot though. I'm not quite sure where he fits in as I don't think he can guard the 3 due to his lack of size and length, which puts him strictly at the 2 with both Powell and TDIII. Maybe allows us to move one of Powell and TDIII for a young big or wing.

I'm going to introduce Matt Mitchell from SDSU into this thread. I'm disappointed in myself for overlooking this gentleman...

6'6" 225 lb G/F that moves like a guy who's 20-30 pounds lighter. He also shot 39% from 3 on over 3 attempts per game. I'd say the closest comparison I can think of for him is Jae Crowder with more athleticism. Mitchell used to be 240 and looked a lot like Larry Johnson, but slimmed down to a leaner 225 so the Crowder comparison more currently accurate. But to be honest, he moves a lot more fluidly than Crowder. Mitchell can give you a little something off the dribble.

He's likely only gauging interest this draft, unless someone gives him a promise, but I'm very impressed with him to say the least.

Check out some of the moves he can make at his size:

Yeah, Miles is a perfect body comparison and their games are similar, except Miles is out of this world athletically.

How’s his ability to finish around the rim? From the highlights it looks like he barely gets off the ground but has really long arms.

That makes sense. Unless somebody drops a lot, selecting a guard doesn't make too much sense. Our need isn't a guard but wing ball handlers.

Which guards would worth taking over Tillman and/or Reed if they drop? Which guards would be worth taking over the wings that drop (Saddiq Bey, Patrick Williams, McDaniels, Precious Achiuwa)?

I saw people like Kira Lewis and Tyrell Terry. I personally was interested in Theo Maledon since he has solid height (6'4) and a great wingspan (6'8) for defensive versatility. He might be able to defend bigger players which helps if we want to play him beside Fred, Norm, Kyle, TD.

I think something we can take into consideration is that if we select a guard, they will probably be sent to the 905 for most of the first season so we wouldn't need somebody NBA ready from day 1.

Is there even anyone like that at our spot? Do you mean just ball handling or shot creating too?

I see McDaniels, Green, Bolmaro, Elleby, and maybe Scrubb as being those types. Out of those guys Green is the only guy I'm really intrigued by, possibly Elleby too, but the short arms and bad stats are a bit of a hurdle.

If Green isn't there, we might as well just run with McCaw and hope he develops more consistency, since he basically fits what you're describing.
