I would rather overpay a younger Ayton than FVV. And for a team like the Raptors, fixating on not overpaying players and not using up our salary cap space is a little overrated. Sure it’s not good business sense to go into the luxury tax for a mediocre team but it’s not like we are attracting even half decent free agents to come here and take our money even if we had open cap space to work with. To attract anyone here even by chance, we have had to over-pay (talking about guys like Dermare Carrol, Jason Kapono, etc). To keep our guys here, we have had to overpay somewhat as well. Making good trades, nailing our draft picks, and internal player development, has been how we have stayed competitive.

I guess Ayton would be like the Hawks paying John Collins and trading him later.

Suns had to match to re-sign him at a higher figure rather than lose him for nothing. I think they would like to move on from Ayton because of his weird personality - got into it with coach and teammates a bunch of times.

Raps have worked with difficult personalities and could feature him more so maybe it works out. Ayton would have to agree to the trade Toronto so that is the biggest question because he can veto anything.

Are you still on about this? Ayton. Isn't. Good.

He's vastly overpaid. He's lazy. He's not a rim protector. He's not a shooter. Why would Raptors give up positive assets for someone like that?

Rap acquire:
Deandre Ayton

Suns acquire:
FVV
Jakob Poeltl

Spurs acquire:
Thad Young
Koloko
Suns 2023 FRP
Raps 2025 SRP

Suns get two huge additions that should improve both their PG and C position. Raps get their long-term C. Spurs get a first and plus Koloko and a SRP. Not a bad haul for Poeltl.

So we trade Fred, Thad and a 2nd and all we get back is Deandre Ayton?

I think we would far rather have both FVV and Poeltl. Deandre doesn’t really fit with the team right now.
I believe in Masai.

I think you go the direction of Poeltl you are looking at Toronto as one piece away. He is going to be cheaper but you keep this older group together which has no real room to improve. We know how good they are and they are in the lotto.

I don't particularly like Ayton at the moment, but getting a young C with size and upside, that will also force Nurse out of his ridiculous switching defense, is a good start. Hate the contract but it isn't close to negative value at all and he is at position that there is scarcity.

The best teams in the league have franchise Cs and if you do believe in Toronto player development, Ayton could have that potential.

Why though ? This squad isn’t ready for the bright lights. KD won’t change that.

I don't know. Prior to this weird season Ayton had good WAR and RAPTOR rating for two years. He has declined this year but you wonder if he mentally needs a change of scenery. Anyway, not advocating for him as much as recognizing the FO was pretty serious about him so trying to see the logic.

Fred and 2nd isn't a huge loss. You would have to pay Fred the same as Ayton and you are signing Fred into his 30s. Not many elite 30 year old 6 foot PGs.

I am with you!

Even if we can't do this exact deal the framework of turning a single player into 2 or 3 players with potential upside to make a bigger impact is how we are going to get ourselves back to having a quality 8-9 man rotation.

That depth is what this team needs more than anything. Picks are a way to get there eventually but actual players with upside should definitely be the priority.

Would love me some “Northbrook” on the team. We need his shooting out there.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

I like that deal too, I feel like Orlando has some pieces we could get too.

This team definitely needs just more talent, badly. Why I really hope we somehow do a 1 for 2/3 deal plus pick up and extra first rounder.

That's a TERRIBLE return for us

nah, former number 1 pick at just 24 years old, 2-way player, 20/10 player under contract for years to come. Playoff perforner. It would be a great return. (I would try to keep Koloko )

Former Number 1 - yes

24 years old - yes

2-way player - is he? Suns are a -4.3 with him on the floor and +7.9 when he is off. Defense was better in 2021-22 when he was on the bench as well. That worries me a bit. Whenever I watch him I am not blown away by his defense either.

Playoff performer - He got ran off the floor by Dallas last year

Not really, Dallas happened because CP3 and Booker fell off and couldn't defend as well as Mikal being unable to avoid the switch. Ayton is a fantastic switch defender-which is part of the reason that he averages so little boards and blocks. He's always on an island against some guard or wing.

The Dallas also happened because our coach didn't take advantage of the massive difference between Ayton and the bums the Mavs had at center. Most Suns fans feel on our board that if we had pounded the ball for that series we walk away with a victory-probably in under 7 games.

His numbers fell this season due to him being unhappy with the coach and most likely CP3 and his tendency to be abbrasive/a dick.

I'm kind of hoping Masai goes small and just deals Fred for assets. The only package I'm interested in for Anunoby that has been rumored is OG to New Orleans for Daniels/Murphy/Herb + Lakers FRP or to Portland for Sharpe + FRP. If you don't get a huge offer, just stand pat with OG. He'll get more shots once Fred is gone.

Well sure, it was last summer that we were apparently interested in a sign and trade with Suns. But I doubt it would have been for the max.

And now we has another half-season worth of information about DA, including the confirming intel that he's not worth the max. But if Masai still believes in him, and Freddie and Thad gets it done, then OK.

someone will pay for OG

Might come down to wire with masai vs griffin cuz the hold out gonna be trey murphy. They aint giving up top 2 lakers pick so it will be protected.

If we dont get murphy we walk. Dyson too slow to be an eletric guard with mediocre shot.

Else keep OG move or him somewhere else

Tear it down, or go for broke for Durant
