For sure, it would have to happen organically. And unlikely with Jokic. But the West is crazy tough so who knows.

If Murray continues his current trajectory, it would make perfect sense for the Nuggets to throw a season by sitting Jokic, to acquire draft capital to trade. Give Jokic a rest, and replenish some of their talent level. And in a stacked West, if Jokic was out a lot of the season, the Nuggets would plummet in the standings.

You know the Nuggets don't have their pick in 2025 due to the AG trade, right?

Beyond that, wasting a prime year in the hopes of a good lottery pick when you already have of one of the best player's in the NBA almost never works out. The only exception I can think of is the Celtics trading the 5th pick and more for Garnett and even that doesn't work as an example when the Celtics overhauled the roster from the prior season and Pierce was nowhere near as good as Jokic is in their respective primes.

Didn't realize they had already traded the 2025 pick.

But for the Nuggets, who already have their superstar, it is absolutely a viable strategy for one year. Especially if it is a talented and deep draft class. One season thrown away could benefit multiple seasons that follow. The idea would be to turn that lottery pick into a viable 2nd option (via trade), next to Jokic. Also, with all of the basketball Jokic has played over the last few seasons, I'm sure a break for a year could do wonders for the rest of his career.

Organizations don't think this way because nothing is ever guaranteed. The owner wants wins, full arenas, and playoff money.

It's one thing to "tank" when having an unexpected bad year..like Dallas did...or GSW have done. But you don't do it day 1 of the season.

Ah, well it seems it's top 5 protected. So still a Dumb and Dumber's chance they get lucky. That pick could look nice for Orlando should the Nuggets have injuries.

DEN's 1st round pick to ORL protected for selections 1-5 in 2025, 1-5 in 2026 and 1-5 in 2027 (if DEN has not conveyed a 1st round pick to ORL by 2027, then DEN's obligation to ORL will be extinguished) [DEN-ORL, 3/25/2021]

What part of "they don't own their pick" was not clear?

They don't own it.

As a Raptors fan, you should be very much aware that you can tank for nothing when you don't control your own pick.

Also they have Jamal Murray, what the hell are you on about "getting Jokic a second option" like Murray didn't average over 30 in the NBA Finals?

Jokic got a team led by Will Barton into the playoffs without the play-in, they're not going to be bad enough to give Orlando a lottery pick.

The problem is the championship Murray was two seasons ago. The current Murray looks done. Unless he can make a massive turnaround, he is no longer a reliable second option to Jokic.

It was one season ago and he was playing injured during that postseason - and he still showed up in big moments re: That Lakers buzzer beater.

One bad postseason - literally a few months ago I might add - and a bad Olympics outing is not enough to somehow erase Jamal's lengthy history of being a playoff riser. No one is looking at Wemby playing meh for his standards throughout the Olympics and writing off his rookie season as a result.

This is a stupid conclusion to make.

Murray has never had an all-star season, and had two great playoff runs (2019-20 and 2022-23). His first three seasons he played 82, 81 and 75 games, but since then he has played 65 or less games a season, with one season completely missed. He just turned 27 in February, but it is not looking good for his career. He has had more bad than good runs.

RIP Al Attles. Lifetime Warriors guy from playing on the Philly Warriors with Wilt since 1960, coached the team in the Bay area from 68-83 and front office ever since. Raptors' Wayne Embry is quoted in the article on how tough Attles was as a player, at 6 feet, 175. Shot 8 for 8 the game Wilt scored 100. Coached GSW to a sweep of the Bullets in the 75 Finals.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

This is going to be a weird NBA season. Like the Det pistons are 10 deep, Portland has a solid roster, Hornets have a solid roster. The parity amongst the league will be on full display this year. Boston starting the year without porzingas, a bunch of teams at or near aprons which diminishes ways to add to the roster. OKC looks stacked but I don't think any one or groups of teams run away with it.

I'm hoping Charlotte surprises this season and I think they have a real shot; I'm still high on Lamelo and Miller is tracking to be an all-star in a few years imo. If they disappoint again (healthy or injury related), I'd seriously consider giving the team over to Miller and figuring out if Lamelo has a place on my team going forward.

Pistons have promising talent but nothing there fits. Outside of a Cade breakout, they are going to be basement dwellers yet again.

Similarly, Portland has some good players, but they have too many guards and Cs that they need to prioritize and give reps to. I expect they'll try and move on from Ayton, but I also think they need to make a decision on who between Simons, Scoot, and Sharpe is the odd man out. With that said, I can see them surprising (a lot harder though out west as compared to CHA for example), and I think this may be their last tanking season if they don't.

Cade / Thompson / Fonteccino / Tobias / Duren
That works position wise, maybe not enough shooting & creativity
Ivey / Beasley / THJ / Holland / Stewart
I guess the shooting comes off the bench
Paul Reed
Sasser
Bobi Klintman (who I like)

They got guys they can move around,

I like Charlotte too, new coach & yeah hopefully they're healthy

Detroit getting JB Bickerstaff was a smart move. Look at how he turned around Cleveland which was a young team with an odd configuration (two PGs in and two Cs). He made them an elite defense despite it not quite being a normal line-up. Detroit has good talent all around and we just have to see what a healthy Cade looks like. I still think he has the best player potential in that class, although Mobley if he figures out how to shoot will be tough.

I'd personally take Barnes over both for a multitude of reasons, but to each their own
