They are just so underwhelming with no upside for bug future moves. I don't usually ascribe to the pitfalls of the "treadmill" archetype because I think collecting assets as a middle of the pack team puts you in a position to make that big move. But they are a middle of the pack team without the assets. In which case....yah it totally feels like they are on a treadmill.
I don't see any hope for that franchise.
They weren't always tanking and they also didn't have the best management while also not being in a desirable city for players to want to go to....They half assed it a couple times...I remember getting Blake for no reason etc....They now have Cade who i believe is a player worth building around....Duren, Thompson, Ivey (Injured but had a good season for them) have some good upside....If they can draft well with their 19th/20thish picks they should be fine in keep building around Cade if Cade keeps propelling as a player.
I've watched 5 or 6 games this season (cade's best) and I just find him very underwhelming. Using the big 3 format of team building...he could be a serviceable member of a big 3. But he'd need to be paired with another guy with similar value and a superstar.
I don't see anyone else on their roster that has big 3 potential. When a tanking team transitions to a playoff team....I think they need no less than 2 future big 3 guys. They managed to emerge from the cellar with only 1 (not the superstar piece, just a serviceable one). And I don't see a path in acquiring the other 2.
But you never know. Every young player has the chance to come back from an off-season and make a leap. I just perceive the Piston prospects as being unlikely to do that.
