NC State at North Carolina is on TSN2 right now.

Barnes has 9 points in the first 3 minutes.

He's obviously young and raw so I think their ranking of him in the top 3 is also a little ambitious at this time. Like Kanter, he'll stay in the lottery because teams always love bigs but I think he'll slide a little outside of the top 5 as teams will see him as more of a project the same way Andris Biedrins was seen as a coordinated, hard working, agile and athletic big man with upside.

Givony describes him as Biedrins with a higher ceiling. For one, Valanciunas' biggest strengths include being a superb finisher on the pick and roll. As of Dec 26 when Givony wrote his last report on him, Valanciunas had either scored or drawn a foul on 43 of 50 pick and roll attempts as meaured by Synergy Sports.

In the NBA, that's money, and couple that with an 87% free throw record, and it's pretty easy to see a dangerous offensive weapon. Valanciunas sets a good screen, rolls hard to the basket, and finishes really well. Biedrins isn't that level of finisher, never was. In this kind of draft, I expect Valanciunas to hang around the 3-7 range, no lower. If a bad teams bets there will be a lockout, he's an excellent investment because he'll keep on playing at a high level next year while most NCAA picks are playing in the D-League or playgrounds.

Hmmm, you're making me like him even more than I already did. Those numbers are impressive. Can he step out and shoot it too? If he had a money set shot like Ilgauskas I'd be be even more intrigued by the guy because there is a lot to like there and you're also right about being able to let him play a year overseas. How's his defence?

As much as I like him though, I don't see him cracking the top 4 this year.

Irving, Jones and Sullinger seem like solid bets for an eventual consensus top 3 and then there's going to be some March Madness stories and performance opportunities for guys like Derrick Williams or Terrence Jones to step up and boost their stock a little. Bad teams need to sell these picks to their fanbases so there will be some slight tournament boosts for these guys if they can go on a run and make some exciting stories happen and Valanciunas doesn't have that same opportunity.

I don't see how he slides past 10 though in this draft so 6-10 seems pretty likely at this point for me.

i remember how Derozan was touted as a top 3 prospect then slipped after his poor play. Reminds me of Barnes and i think Barnes could be a star in this league.

2 expiring vets that help now. A young big to add to the Scottie timeline
I'd prefer to keep Stew and give Monte Morris
I'd really prefer to keep Morris and Stew and give the great Killian Hayes and 2nd round picks

Barnes is playing well today. He's a tall wing, and looks to have the tools to be a good rebounder - don't know what the stats stay though.

Do we need another player who shoots midrange pull-ups (Barnes)?

Perry Jones is all potential right now. Do teams have the patience these days for potential?

Barnes' D looks good so far. I think his issues are all confidence, similar to how Demar's confidence issues held him back at times somewhat.

Yeah, that's the thing about Barnes for me - do really want another guy who doesn't exude mental toughness on our team?

I thought the reports out of high school said that he had a killer instinct. We have yet to see that from him.

This is only my 2nd long look at Barnes. He is a really pesky defender. He's just all over his guy. I also like how he is crashing the defensive boards as soon as every shot is released.

With the way he's playing I'm not sure why they don't run the offense through him more.

This is the best Barnes has looked in a while.
