Colangelo has taught me one thing; these do-it-all guys are a waste of time unless they're an elite player. So my philosophy if I were a GM would be that any player I get needs to have AT LEAST one ELITE ability, excluding hops. That ability can be anything from shooting, passing, defense, hustle, scoring, rebounding, etc. That type of player ranges from the likes of Reggie Evans (rebounding) to Kevin Martin (scoring) to LeBron James (everything).
Guys like Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan are nice players, but guys like that would be 4th or 5th options on my team, at MUCH less money.
The problem with Colangelo's style of GMing in my opinion is that he always looks for these Swiss army knife players who are mediocre at everything and I guess that's good to play .500 ball, but not much more.
The OTHER difference between us and the best teams besides elite players are our role players. Miami has Battier, Allen, and Chalmers who are all knock down shooters. OKC has Martin who's an elite scorer, Collison who's an elite hustler, Perkins who is an elite (but overpaid) post defender, and Ibaka who is an elite shot blocker. Indiana has Hill who is an elite defender, Hansborough who is an elite jackass, and West who is an elite leader. New York has Novak who is an elite shooter, Shumpert who is an elite defender, and Chandler who is also an elite defender.
Now let's look at the Raps. The only guy who I can name that is elite at anything is Amir Johnson, who is an elite hustler.
