from a natural talent/physically giften perspective, he is a bottom 10 pick

I disagree.

He screams natural talent and a guy who grew his game tremendously just this past year.

I couldn't agree more.

What's funny is that I had lunch with Terrence Ross' agent yesterday. We talked about every possible scenario. Toronto never came up.

Fit-wise, I'm sure the front office looked at our numbers when Lowry or VanVleet went to the bench and thought "if only we could have a 3rd one of those guys..."

I think he compares favorably to FVV with his in-between game, slightly better release point and elevation. My concern is Lowry and FVV are built like trucks, and this guy isn't, so he'll give up something on defense. We've gotten away with the all 6-foot backcourt this far, but I'm skeptical it can take us over teams with length+skill everywhere like the Celtics.

29. Toronto Raptors: Malachi Flynn, G, San Diego State
Never bet against Masai Ujiri in the draft. There’s always an experienced college point guard who exceeded expectations toward the end of the first round, and Flynn checks every one of those boxes. He’s a well-rounded player with no holes in his game and the ability to contribute right away on both ends of the floor. The comparisons to Fred VanVleet might be a stretch, but they are also inevitable.

Then Flynn led the Aztecs to a 30-2 record, pacing them in scoring and assists, and suddenly he was climbing up NBA Draft boards. The Toronto Raptors selected him 29th overall on Wednesday, culminating a stunning rise in just a few years. His frame, at 6-1 and 185 pounds, still doesn’t scream pro potential. But you just have to watch him go to work.

“He just plays the game the right way,” San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher says. “If he’s open, he shoots it. If someone else is open, he gives it to him. It’s as simple as that.”

Well, maybe that is a little overly simple. Still, it’s not that far off, especially once you see Flynn operating in the pick-and-roll. He scored 1.06 points per possession as a pick-and-roll ballhandler last season for San Diego State, ranking in the 96th percentile according to Synergy data. But even that doesn’t tell the whole story, as Flynn is an outstanding creator in pick-and-roll situations and can make just about any read or type of pass, as this video illustrates.

That’s a big reason why Flynn averaged 17.6 points, led the Mountain West with 5.1 assists per game and posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 3-to-1. Dutcher says he can’t claim credit for Flynn’s master of the pick-and-roll.

“The really good ones have an instinct and innate ability to make those plays,” Dutcher says. “We mapped it out, showed him different ways he would be guarded and made sure he could use a good setup move and create space. But the great players have a way about them that you can’t teach.”

I trust Masai. Flynn will be learning from the GOAT Raptor Lowry and Freddy if he stays.
