I still feel that management generally makes moves that make sense, but the center position has been a complete mystery the entire season. Why let Ibaka and Gasol go when we probably wouldn't have had to overpay that much? Why give Baynes so much money? Why let Len go when we only had Baynes? Why not make the center position a priority before the trade deadline?
Maybe there just have been more unfortunate situations in the background than we know of?
let me try to answer from my point of view/understanding.
gasols thinking was - if i am gonna move to Tampa for the season, might as well move to LA and be close to his brother (pau who just had a kid) and better chance at chip, remember marc was also drafted by lakers, a small homecoming etc.
Ibaka - wanted multi year deal, at this point Giannis still hadn't resigned, so looks like raptors passed on that keeping Giannis option open.
Baynes - though having a bad season, at the time wasnt a bad signing at that time, 1 year deal. many many people on this board wanted him signed and liked the signing
Len - i think there was locker room issue, remember when the team started bad 2-8 or something, and len said there was tension in locker room, hell yeah the raptors coming off 2nd best record in nba, 15 game winning streak last year, chip the season before. as a fan i thought that was odd coming from a player who has never even sniffed the playoffs. just because its another regular record for len, doesnt mean the raptors players liked that.
As for fixing the position at deadline, management probably already wrote off the season, and saw no reason to spend an asset to improve a position at this time.
