I feel like there might of been trades on the table that some teams got cold feet on. This trade in isolation makes no sense, makes me think that some teams were messing with our front office, we executed part 1 of what was supposed to be a 2 or 3 part series of trades that never materialized.

Should have been lottery protected if anything or they should have just done this last year instead of trading for Thad
I see us drafting 15-22ish next year if we go into it with no cap room and no bench again like this year

Its not a bad deal if we still had Prime Lowry, DD, Siakam and the bench mob and all we needed was a C like Yak to fill a need....But Masai seems to over value Siakam/FVV ability to lead a team to the promise land....This season is gonna suck man...Basically a lost season being either a play in loser team or a just almost made the playoffs and basically end up with a 13th pick.....
If the pick we get in next years draft turns out to be a bust then its really gonna be tuff to be a fan here in Toronto...

Imagine we drafted
Bane>Flynn
Kessler>Koloko
Having Barnes/Bane/Kessler/GTJR/Precious As your young guns and Siakam/FVV/Yak As your vets...That would be a team i could get behind...Man the difference just 1 or 2 draft mistakes can have on your team

I’ll explain it when you explain how we sign him with no cap space.
The plan is to re-sign him anyways.
Sir if you don’t know how the CBA works maybe you shouldn’t be criticizing managements decisions. That goes for a lot of posters not just you.

The season wasn't lost one month ago.
So in ONE month the season went from salvageable to lost, even though there's TWO full months left.
Got it.

A lot more than 1 or 2 mistakes. Thad himself was a worthless pick-up. So was Birch. So was OPJ. So was Hernangomez. Svi. Yuta. etc. etc. And not getting an actual C like Claxton when he was clearly available last offseason. Or even getting any kind of C in the 2021 offseason. We needed one back then too, lol.
Just so, so bad.

the timing seems a bit off, but otherwise i'm a fan of this move. means they keep two of Vanvleet, GTJ and Pöltl this summer with Fred being the most likely to bounce. this team desperately needed a rim protecting big who can pass and Jakob fits nicely. they'll still most likely add a lotto pick too and aside from Wemby + Scoot every other lottery pick is in a similar tier. use the lotto pick to replace Fred and i'm happy with this lineup next year.
I don't think we are getting a lottery pick at this point. We have a pretty decent path to end up with the #7 or #8 seed via the play in. Whether that is good or bad, it is what it is.
we'll see what happens.
We are already 10th.
The Poeltl move signals we are probably pulling no shenanigans this year, or at least for a # of games. So we will keep playing who we have played, and we will probably get a bit better. We were a 48-34 team last year, our margin differential metrics are better than our record, and Poeltl should help us. Our win% will likely be somewhat better over the last 26, than the first 56.
The Pacers are settling down as expected and are now behind us.
The Wizards could push us I suppose, but we are better than them on paper anyway.
Then you have the Nets - they are going to free fall. But at the same time they have zero incentive to tank. So they could very well secure one of the 4 play in spots in the East. So if the Raptors are the play in, the fact that the Nets are in makes it much easier for them to get in via play-in.
Not saying at all this is the path we should have taken - thought we should have pulled back a bit. But it is what it is -- it is more likely than not that we are not a lottery team.

Like the kid but it does nothing in the grand scheme of things
I’d bet my house these lack of critical decisions that needed to be made will see us plummet to the bottom within a year

We are a borderline lottery team with a scrub and 2nd rounder as our primary centers. Poeltl has approximately been a +10 plus/minus player when the Spurs weren't a complete tank job.
We aren't going to convey a lottery pick next season. We will finish in the top 6 or the play in this year, and add depth plus another year of development for Barnes, Achiuwa, Banton, and Koloko. OPJ is back next season. We cannot be worse unless there is a talent shift back into the East. It's a good deal. Vote abysmal if you didn't read this post and you are an emotional teenager.
I gotta love that 53 people .... didn't read the original post and or...
Or they just disagree with the rationale behind this move in isolation.
I don't see how we add needle moving depth unless its through the draft because we don't/won't have assets to trade come off season and contracts are up, and this move worsens our pick this year. We have 3 pending UFA and 68 million to spend all while we lack consistent shooting and the entire bench is bottom 3 in the league. Is it that hard to believe some might not care to chase a bottom seed in the playoffs and get embarrassed by the Celtics/Bucks in the first round? We're also one injury to Fred/Siakam away from going back down to the bottom of the East with how many minutes the starters have to play just to stay competitive
Don't think people are arguing we got worse but we didn't exactly position ourselves to be atop of the East with this move any time soon unless you expect guys already on the roster to take some major leap and organically turn into star players. We'll see what happens in the off season

The one good thing about Purtle is that we finally have a guy willing to play their role and be unselfish.

Get outta here with that talk, you aren't allowed to like any move that gets made in this place no matter how right you might be.

So the season wasn't lost when we were 5+ games below .500 and about to play a whole bunch of games on the road, but the season is lost now with us winning 6 of our last 9 games (plus the next 3 before the break looking very winnable at home) while we added someone that most of this forum wanted a few weeks ago in exchange for scraps (Birch hasn't played in the new year and totaled 160 minutes before that) and picks down the road. Got it.

Nets will win around 46 games. that puts them in the top 6 this year. top 6 is unlikely to change. the rest is tpd in my opinion.
i'd obviously prefer a top 10 pick vs the 8th seed. the lowest their pick can realistically be is like 15-16. not ideal, but you can still find a nice player in that range.

Re-signing isn't the same as signing.
You can re-sign a player without cap space. You can't sign a player without cap space.
Ahhh...thank you! I did not know that.

I think an overlooked aspect of acquiring Yak is that now Koloko has a legit vet big to learn the fundamentals from and battle in practice.
How much could Koloko actually learn by not practicing/playing with any true 5s??
I like it.

Seems like the FO is very confident they can at least get a FRP for one of OG/FVV/GTJ this summer. From a pure value stand point I don't mind the deal at all. If anything, I'm questioning the direction they're taking... I don't see a path to playoff success anytime in the near future.

I'm also concerned about the value of this year's pick which is for what is projected to be a strong draft class. Might as well call it a season and finish with a top 5 pick.

Well obviously for og they will get more than a first. I don’t know which player they don’t want of gtj and fvv but I can’t see many teams giving up much in a s&t for either.
