He should probably be playing more than 20 minutes most nights, especially on nights where he is making plays all over the court like against the Pacers, but I think he's going to explode for 30+ where he's hot and Darko eventually gives him some extra minutes.
I never wavered on Gradey becoming a good player eventually, but it's extremely surprising how drastically he turned his rookie season around and it seems like he's only going to keep getting better the rest of the season and the rest of his career. It's hard to see him being a bust with so much basketball smarts and awareness in addition to possessing a high-level skill in shooting.
More mins is risky cause we dont know if he has the strength and stamina to hold up for more than 22mins. Let him thrive in his current workload for now and then loosen the strings next year.
I'm not saying to play him 30 minutes every game, but he should be getting a few extra minutes on some nights he is producing really well – and the same goes for Agbaji. I understand the thought process of not wanting to just throw them out there for big minutes 3-4 times per week, but we should also be rewarding our young players with a few extra minutes every once in a while. Brown and GTJ were in the 28-30 MPG range in those 3 recent games that I highlighted (Spurs, Hawks and Pacers) whereas Gradey and Agbaji were in the 18-22 MPG range despite generally being more impactful. We don't know if Gradey in particular is capable of playing big minutes now because he has only had that opportunity a few times – though he is averaging 16 PPG on 63 TS% in the 4 games he has played 25+ minutes – but what is the harm in giving him a few extra minutes from Brown/GTJ here and there?
I think who he plays with, and the length of the stretches he does in the second half continue to be more important than just a mere minutes measurement. Darko is giving him good run from mid-to-late 3Q well into the 4Q, so he is getting some crunch time exposure with starters when the game is still on the line, one way or the other, and that is more valuable than bringing him in earlier in Q1
