I think there are lots of things to consider here:

The Grizzlies are probably looking to dump Z-Bo, and they need a replacement. It could be a call by ownership saying that they can't afford his contract, and move him in the off-season. Davis would work as a starting PF playing with Gasol.

Gay is overpaid and Hollinger was not a big fan of him, never really been.

The thing to watch: if they can move Z-Bo for something, otherwise they may have to lose Ed Davis (he is due for an extension).

I read somewhere that the Grizzlies calculated they had less than a 15% chance to win it all and they decided to make these trades. That screams Hollinger. He's like a robot that only makes decisions on numbers and probability.

I would say Hollinger's presence made sure it was Gay, as opposed to (the older, probably slightly more valuable) Randolph.

there's no disputing that PER is not kind to Rudy Gay. and therefore the new FO probably considered him+his contract to have negative value.

Yahoo Sports has developed a good rep. They actually investigate and blow the lid on things that ESPN and Fox won't touch, because they are too in bed with the leagues/conferences. Do you really think the networks would have revealed everything about the SEC scandals? Not in a million years.
