I honestly can't think of any teams who had a 4-19 start.

The Bulls in one of their pre Rose years had a terrible start to the year and made it to the playoffs, but I don't think they started off as bad as us.

I don't know about start to season, but in the 1950's the Baltimore Bullets made the playoffs with a 16-54 record. That's about a 4-14 start done 4 times in a row. Of course, 8 of the 10 teams made the playoffs.

In the modern era a Michael Jordan Bulls team made the playoffs with a 30-52 record.

Even if the Raps make the playoffs, Casey still won't get a single vote for COY. Not one. You don't get rewarded as a coach for digging yourself a huge hole early and then climbing back out of it. If Casey was fired after 23 games and the new coach brought the raps into the playoffs, that coach would get some attention for the award.

Casey shouldn't win COY for the Raptors, let alone the NBA.

That's another good way to look at it. But like I said, the NBA always makes questionable decisions.

Don't think so, all the credit goes to Rudy Gay and to an extent Brian Colangelo. Colangelo may get GM of the year if the Raps can make it to the second round somehow.

There are too many damn mistakes to list that he constantly makes EVERY game. He won't win the COY and he shouldn't even be in contention for it to be honest. His coaching is fairly bad and he consistently gets credit for when players bail him out.

I know what you mean. Most of us see it this way as well. But the NBA will not look at it this way, because they don't follow every game like we do. And there's no statistics that can prove that Casey is a bad coach.
The 8th seed is the only statistic that can solely dictate if Casey is a good coach or a bad one.

I think at least someone will take note of the fact that the turnaround from 4-19 began at approximately the same time that the Raps "best player" and "leading scorer" got injured...a guy that this supposed COY candidate had insisted on starting and playing heavy minutes despite the fact that he was useless.

No freaking way he wins the award.

That said, I do agree that the team's storyline is the best indicator of the COY winner. My best guess at the winner this year:

Mark Jackson - Golden State (assuming they can recover from their swoon and hold on to a playoff spot, they'll have the best storyline in the league)
George Karl - Denver
Frank Vogel - Indiana

Personally I think the winner should be either Tom Thibodeau or Pop, but those choices would imply a selection made primarily on actual coaching ability rather than the team's storyline...
Interviewer: Championship #2?
Ujiri: Hey...We're gonna get it. I don't know when it'll be, but we're gonna get it. Just like I said we'll get the first one and I said I didn't know when we'd get it...But we will. Guarantee you we will.

I sincerely hope you're joking, BC isn't going to get even a single vote for Executive of the year. No

The players should all get an MVP if they can make it despite Casey.

It goes both ways. He was the coach from the beginning. Any credit he gets for wins he should also get for the terrible start.

I think he should win it again too, he's the best coach in the Association by a large margin. But he won it last year so I would put his odds at somewhere between slim and none.

Hell no. If the main criterion is playoff appearance then D'Antoni would be more likely to win COY given that the Lakers were in a near identical situation being in the West.

If the Dubs hang on I'd wager Jackson winning it. Would not be surprised if Pops doesn't get it since the NBA likes to snub consistency, i.e.; Sloan

Homer Jay wrote:Mitchell should never have won it, he rode BC's roster makeover, coupled with not missing his two best players, (Bosh and Mo Pete) for a good chunk, to the improved record. We were annihilated in the playoffs by an inferior NJ team with a superior coach. They had three stars, but the rest of their roster was a joke. Mikki Moore as your starting C? Enough said.

I think Popovich will win if SA can hit the .800 level to end the season. Vinny Del Negro is in the running, and Spoelstra might get some love too. Mark Jackson could see some love for the improvement in GS's record and possible playoff appearance.

Pops? Yes. Spo? Never.

Casey? In the D league? Yes. In the NBA? No. Not now anyway. One day, if he has figured out player rotations, and he is winning at a .750 or better clip, then OK. If they make the playoffs, I still wouldn't give him 'coach of the last half season' award. Way to many bad decisions. Even in wins. You don't have to look any further than last game. Keeping Kyle out for so long almost cost them the win. Certainly cost them the large lead they had entering the fourth quarter.

No chance.
Mark Jackson's probability of winning it all is pretty high, tehy went from mid lottery team to middle of the pack western conference playoff team which is a substantial improvement
Mike Woodson is also a candidate with what he's done with the New York knicks this season.
Frank Vogel is also a candidate
Popovich should win the award every other year but his team is assumed to dominate every season that he's constantly looked over. Spurs are the most well run franchise in the entire league by a fair margin after all.

Hell I'd even give Adelman a mention.
What he's done with those perpetually injured Wolves is amazing considering they seem to lose a key player to injury every 2-3 games. Kirilenko + Barea has been essentially the only healthy bodies on the team. Infact, Brandon Roy is one of the healthier bodies on the team to put into perspective how injury riddle they'v ebeen. They should be bottom dwellers at bobcat levels with the way the season has gone but they've been surprisingly competitive and playing above .500 ball with everyone healthy.

Casey will likely get an honorable mention in the end if the Raptors do make the playoffs but not even close to the actual reward itself.

Pops has done more with even less this round. I'd hope that counts for something.
