toronto sports radio is dead judging from what the fan was in the summer vs now.

they have hoops every thursday and im not even sure it has many listeners.

and yeah its all about podcasts now. theres no shortage of podcasts out there, anyone who can talk with an internet connection can start one.

Even if Toronto sports radio would do such a thing, it would be interrupted every 6 minutes by the major, last minute, hurry up before it's gone, revolving door ads about Ford Fusion, Harbour 60 Steakhouse, some creepy law firm, Bell internet latest offer, etc.
Truth is on the side of the oppressed.

I'd definitely support this, especially since I spend a majority of my day driving to & fro meetings... I think Tim & Sid would be a good pairing to host the show on The Fan which could include daily guests, basketball insiders and social media/phone in questions.

I agree with everyone here that the current state of Toronto sports radio is not great for hoops fans but that's not really the spirit of my op. I wanted to see if we're at a point that listenership in Toronto could support a daily sports talk show in Toronto.

Being in my forties, I wasn't really around for any of the real Leafs glory years. However, the Raptors have been ingrained in my everyday life and I feel like it's the same for everyone else in my age range. I also feel at this age, most of the money is in this demographic to spend. I feel like the media companies are really missing out on that. Can anyone else here around my age say that they wouldn't tune in at mid day to listen to a hoops show everyday? I know I would be tuned in.

The programming on these stations (especially 590) are just long commercials for Rogers and Bell's tv schedule. Rogers spent a lot on hockey rights and they own the Jays outright so that's what they're going to discuss most of the time.

As mentioned above, you can get much better basketball discussion from outlets like podcasts anyways.

I really don't want to pay for content. I'd rather have to listen to a couple of minutes of advertising. My Bell bill is high enough.

you can do 30 day sirius trials every 30 days.

takes a minute every month.

I used to have spotify and decided to use the sirius for music. On a 6 month trial for 36 bucks total. I get nba radio with it so felt like a no brainer.

Now would I pay anything more than 10 bucks a month for it, hell nah.

To be fair, radio shows are catered to white males in their 30s to 50s. Aka, the majority of Hockey and Baseball sycophants. The basketball audience is much younger and as such more technologically aware. They couldnt give a rats ass what a bunch of old white guys on the radio have to say about basketball. I listen to the radio out of sheer necessity as i spend an hour in traffic every morning on my way to work and i gotta tell you, basketball talk of any kind is a bloody wasteland on the radio. The sheer lack of knowledge and insight about the game is disgusting. Its basically just 10 minutes of endless cliches about the Raptors with the inevitable Hockey reference how some random Maple Leaf reminds them of this Raptor or that Raptor. FOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there were enough demand for more basketball-related programming in Toronto sports radio, they would have done it already. Am I wrong to assume that the younger Raptor fan demographic is not very into radio?

Also, the people that would actually host the basketball-related programming probably don't know anything about basketball.

Anyone listen to Coast to Coast AM with George Noory? Now that is fun programming. Full of news and facts.

If I had a job where I was constantly in the car all day I would look into Sirus Satellite radio although if it's
expensive I could see why some might not want to pay.

I would probably listen to Youtube videos while my charger is in. The volume on my phone is loud and you can
always use headphones. It might kill your data though if you're not on Wifi so yeah the best thing to do is
load up on podcasts.

Don't let the media or CRTC dictate what you listen or watch

I definitely think it's ready.
Think of how many more people are into the Raptors than the Blue Jays for example.
Yet once the season starts, Fan 590 has a show on each day.

What really irks me though, is that on the nights when the Raptors and Leafs play at the same time, if the Raptors game is on Fan 590, there is no post game show for the Raptors.
On those nights BOTH sports networks, TSN 1010 and Sportsnet Fan 590, have a LEAFS post game show.
That drives me crazy. :banghead:

WHen your trial is about to expire, or on any annual renewal call them and say you want to cancel.
You'll be amazed at the deals you can get. Say no about 3 times, and they nearly give it to you.

I'm not a podcast guy if I want to keep my radio on for 4 or 5 hours at work. Would rather just put it on one station and leave it on. I don't mind when people talk hockey for short spurts.

Doesn't even have to be at noon. Can give the puckheads their preferred time. But how about 1 hour fully dedicated to basketball at 1 or 2.

Now that I think about it, didn't 590 or 1050 used to have Chuck Swirsky host 1 or 2 hours everyday (or maybe Jack) in the mid-afternoon. I don't think it was fully basketball, but it leaned much more to basketball than other sports.

Just listen to podcasts. Radio is dead. There are tons of Raptors and basketball related pods out there that could fill up your whole day and then some. Then once you get your fill of bball, there's a whole world of interesting pods out there. It makes my commute infinitely better.

I don't listen to the deep dive basketball stuff but between Bill Simmons, Zach Lowe, Howard Beck, Brian Windhorst, even Will Lou and the occassional Starters/TBJ/whatever they're called now and the occassional Woj pod thats more than enough to fill my basketball need.

When Chuck Swirsky had his show, he would talk a ton on basketball. Too bad when he left they never really hired another basketball host.

Also why did the Fan 590 ever get rid of Hoops? Still to bad longtime caller Raptorize John never got to see the Chip

I remember Raptorized John, great fan that was pretty laid back and not negatively emotional like most Raptors fans, what happened to him?
