RIP, a true Blue Jay legend. Growing up we’d all used to try and emulate his throws and batting stance. My cousin met him when Tony was walking about in the city. Said he was super humble about playing in the Majors, and was gracious with his time. A really good man on and off the field, thanks for the memories.

Wow this shocked me, yet another blue jay passes away before their time. He was a blue jay great. He and fred mcgriff were traded for Joe Carter and Alomar, and 2 years later Tony was traded back to the Jays in time to get the second championship ring, was happy he got it. I also remember years later, he was DHing on a night where the Blue Jays were honoring him, and if I recall correctly he almost hit for the cycle that night. RIP Tony, thanks for the memories.

i remember he used to have a confident smirk on his face as soon as he would lift the bat up waiting for the pitch. i really loved his style

He was a money player like Freddy and Lowry. So dependable. So many times in the car we would hear the voice of Jerry Howarth: "and in with a stand up triple is Tony Fernandez!" He was always breaking games wide open. His name is up on the wall at SKYDOME with Tom Henke's and was so deserving. He along with McGriff got the team Robbie Alomar and Joe Carter and then came back for the repeat and did not skip a beat. After his era I ignored the Jays until the Mini Bautista playoffs resurgence. He was a legend Bluejay. Hope they can get back to always being in the conversation with another franchise cornerstone like Tony Fernandez. RIP #1.

Slap bunts, flip throws to first, hat perched precariously atop his hair... I don't know anyone my age who didn't try to be Tony Fernandez at practice.

As I'm sure any of you guys who were kids at the time did, I would often imitate the batting stance of the entire Jays' batting order. While Carter was power, Alomar was bat speed, and Olerud was rhythm, Fernandez was snake-like. He'd s-l-o-w-l-y coil up his bat over his shoulder, focus on the pitch like a cobra, and pounce.

Probably my favorite blue jay for a time. That's too young to go.

Too young to remember those titles and I dont rly know who the guy is but anyone who helps bring a Toronto team to glory deserves nothing but respect.

RIP.

Great fielder, hitter and person. One of the main reasons I spent 6 days a week for 6 months a year on the diamond as a kid.

Traded him and McGriff for Carter and Alomar.

He was the Jays' DeRozan, if DeRozan was a fundamentally flawless 3 and D player and had been re-acquired to win a repeat.

He seemed like a genuinely humble and gentle guy in addition to being an exceptionally skilled and exciting player. It's nice to read all these tributes. Those were great times for the Blue Jays and for Toronto and Tony was a big part of them. RIP.

I was lucky enough to start watching baseball in 1984, so I got to see that 1985 Blue Jay team that finally made it to the postseason. Like mentioned a number of times before all the kids in my neighbourhood tried to emulate Tony Fernández sidearm throwing style and funky batting stance. Too young to pass away :(

So smooth and so slick in the field. The man was truly a joy to watch at the baseball game. RIP Tony.

Met him a few times at charity events back in the day. Super nice guy. Underrated player, almost seemed like he became a better hitter as he got older even in late 30's.
