What they should do is let those kids enter the NBA Draft, and their contracts have an additional year, at the beginning, worth like 1/3 of of the following years contract.

For example
If your the first pick

Year 1 - $3.5M
Year 2 - $10M
Year 3 - $12M (Team option)
Year 4 - $15M (team option)
Year 5 - $18M (team option)

That first year, he can only play with the g-league affiliate.

The team can let do everything else NBA related, except play in the games.
practice, travel, etc.

Good idea, but why not just eliminate the Bird Collegiate Rule?

Wouldn’t that be the best of both worlds? Let prospects enter the draft and go back to college. Seems so simple.

If I remember right, that rule was only for guys going into their Senior year in college.

So, that decision would have be made by the NCAA.

But also, wouldn't you want the guy to be in your team's system, for that one year, instead of in college?

No it was the NBA who implemented the 4 year college rule, not the NCAA. It’s always up to the NBA never the NCAA. Bird was able to circumvent the rule and become eligible as a Junior because 78 was his graduating class. It allowed him to be drafted and still return to college.

That’s my point though why shouldn’t any player above the age of 18 not be able to declare for the draft and still play in college? NCAA hockey players do this every draft and it gives them and the team the option to return to school or enter their farm system.

Imagine Cooper Flagg was eligible to enter the 2024 draft. He goes first overall. He then gets to decide if he wants to attend Duke or go to the G League. Some guys would choose one and some would choose the other for a variety of reasons. It’s debatable if the G League can develop talent better than college in my opinion. One thing college has over the G League is national exposure and intense in game experience. Should be their choice.
