Every year, I’m asked if I have prospects I favor more than the consensus. This year, Reed Sheppard, Bub Carrington, Jared McCain, Baylor Scheierman, Ajay Mitchell
and Jamal Shead are those players.

STRENGTHS: Shead is lightning-quick even by NBA guard standards and is extremely strong for his size. He’s a good leaper with a low center of gravity and physical frame. Because of his tremendous feel for the game and quick-twitch muscles, he seems to react to on-court sequences a full second ahead of others around him. He gets the most out of his athleticism by playing hard — he owns arguably the most constant motor in this draft class and never seems to get tired. His ability to set the tone formed the Cougars’ identity this past season.

Shead is the best defensive guard prospect in the class. In fact, he’s one of the most disruptive defensive guards I’ve ever evaluated. Shead communicates with his teammates incredibly well, always seeming to be telling them where to be while talking through actions. His quickness enables him to stay in front of just about anyone, but he’s also tenacious and downright mean on that end of the court. He doesn’t just give second and third efforts; he gives fourth and fifth efforts on some plays. Shead navigates screens as well as a guard his age possibly can, fighting over the top with reckless abandon and making absurd anticipatory reads where he’ll steal passes while recovering from a ball screen. He had 2.2 thefts per game this past season, a remarkable accomplishment.

There is a lot of pre-negotiation that goes on in the 2nd round. He can go to Europe and make more than a two-way.
