He couldn't even get a FRP from the Knicks for OG (expiry)and went for RJ & IQ. Both of them find each other on the trade block again. But he's paying for a expiring poeltl a lottery pick. That's insane.

This trade and what it indicates is what worries me the most about this now being a Bobby-led team.

He was asked last year about this trade, and he said he was still very surprised by the backlash faced as a result of it. If all of us idiots knew that the deal was completely mistimed, why couldn't he see that?

Plus a few days ago he alluded to playing CMB, Scotty and Jakob together with two shooters and that being enough spacing.

He might be a genius financial guy, but I worry very much about his team building fundamentals.

you could have gotten Kessler a year before and solved the big men problem, instead of trading the FRP for Thad Young and a 2nd. Kessler, less costs/rookie contract, identical skillset to poeltl and still some potential to learn new skills.

Instead he gave up another FRP for a 30 year old big, paid him big money, to "contend", just to trade Siakam and OG 10 months later (for peanuts) after 2 years of evaluating. Ujiri acted headless during that period.

Poeltl is literally Tiago Splitter. You don't trade Lottery Picks for them.

Poeltl is literally Tiago Splitter? You're literally operating like a little child with a time machine.

The question is about the actual results of the trade, not what would have happened if the trade had never occurred.

Good value (not great value we we consider the low protection and the extra 2 seconds rounders) but the value was fair for an experienced center that was partially developed by Toronto that wants to be here

Timing wise , I think we can agree it would have been easier to just rebuild at that time

But the organization wanted to give a last change to the Siakam - FVV - OG core .

Would not be surprise if the preference of the Knicks was Barrett + Fournier + draft capital for O.G

The Knicks had a lot of low value 1st to give .

I think it was the Raps who wanted Quickley instead.

While I like Mogbo in the organization, in hindsight after drafting CMB, I think that drafting Filipowski maybe would have been a better look in the trade today .

But this is just hindsight

I think the O.G trade was great value . But Quickley getting injured + signing a bit higher than expected (at least at the beginning of the contract ) and the redundancy of Mogbo is making the trade look worse today compared to the initial reaction

The Spurs traded that pick for two Minnesota picks with protections that are better than any pick we got in the Siakam trade.

You couldn't get those picks for Jak, we couldn't even get unprotected picks for Siakam.

In a vacuum we lost this trade on pure value, and it's of course disastrous adding context.

For the billionth time, the trade was not the problem, the timing of the trade was. It is absurd this is still a talking point.

Other teams appear to negotiate better in trades than our front office. Typical of people who are reactive instead of proactive.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

It’s been a complete and utter failure so far.

It was a win now move which has paid the following dividends:

0 playoff appearances

Forfeited a #8 overall pick

Anyone calling this trade a “B” or better is completely out of touch. That’s not even a reflection on Poeltl (who is a fine player). I don’t blame him for the failure. The entire purpose behind the trade was to become a playoff team and the entire crowning achievement of the Poeltl-era has been losing to the sh*t-ass Bulls in the play-in.

Trade doesn't look bad in hindsight.

We acquired Poeltl in exchange for 3 guys that are fighting for NBA minutes.

This trade was often labelled as Masai's biggest mistake. Has your view changed?[/]

Excellent logic.

If Spurs traded the #1 pick in 2023 to ORL and they proceeded to select Anthony Black at 1 would you say “doesn’t look bad in hindsight”?

I think Raptors draft Edey with the 8th pick.....you could ask who would be better for the Raptors, Poeltl or Edey on a rookie contract.

I'm not against the Poeltl trade, just thought the pick protection could've been a bit better

For me personally I hated the timing and the protection they put in it.

My view is this was likely Masai’s biggest misstep. Revisiting the trade is incredibly reasonable in the aftermath of his firing. It was astonishingly tone deaf at the time as we clearly should have leaned into the tank in 2023 by trading Pascal and Fred then, instead of making this trade and the absurd push for play in embarrassment, and almost everyone in the NBA seemed to know it except Masai and co. That matters. Then in 2024, the impact of the trade saw us still trying to tank just to lose our pick. That matters. And we are still feeling the impact of that trade as our rebuild isn’t as strong as it should be at this point, because obviously we should have added two better players through the draft.

People are putting way too much stake in what words Pelley said in the politically worded press conference. Of course he wasn’t going to **** on Masai or the current state of the team… even if he wanted to. We don’t know everything that went into the decision, but to think past decision making wasn’t considered by MLSE when firing Masai is just crazy to me. Sure it might be about money too, but that’s just because they reasonably wouldn’t have wanted to continue paying top dollar for shaky decisions.

Anyways, love Masai for lots so wish him well. But decisions like the Poeltl trade were his downfall here IMO.

Bad timing and it could’ve been disastrous if we gave up our pick this year instead of last year. We made out very well in the deal given who was drafted at 8 and after.

The trade is an F

Beside the picks we sent away for him, we got a floor raising C for the last two years when we were tanking for draft position - absolutely counterproductive

How did we make out well? Poeltl was supposed to be the finishing piece of rounding out the starting lineup.

We’ve played in exactly ZERO playoff games since acquiring him.

Please explain how this trade has benefited us in ANY way so far.

I love how it goes from disastrous to making out very well, despite the only difference being the draft year. We lost the pick, and gained absolutely nothing. It was abysmal.

Masai is gone, people can stop pretending it was a good trade now.

Because we got a good player and there’s a strong chance that everyone drafted at 8 and above never become as good as Poeltl.

The timing was bad and protections should’ve been better. But we got the best player in the deal.

It’s like for the longest freakin time Raptors fans were arguing that we won the AD for 5th pick trade because that pick was Jonathan Bender.

Let’s look at another trade. If we hadn’t traded for Thad Young, we would have drafted Andrew Nembhard
