Re: OT: Miami, New York, Chicago - three of America's worst
have you guys seen the Alpha Cities rankings?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Cities
it's obviously skewed towards degree-educated, middle class+, and 20-30 somethings with a professional background, but i'd say that the rankings are pretty objective. If you fall roughly under those categories, New York and London are probably the best places on the planet to live. Toronto is definitely a top 10-15 global city.
but this is, of course, all subjective. i think there's no comparison that Toronto trumps Miami, but I would highly contest the fact that New York and Chicago are worse places to live in than Toronto unless you're in the bottom decile of the socioeconomic bracket, are an immigrant/african american/latino, and live in a drug-infested, crime-ridden rathole. other than that, I'd have to go with: New York >>>>> Chicago >> Toronto>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Miami. But to each one's own.

This is what Ive been saying. If you think critically Miami is not a good place to live. There is more to a city than just weather and scantially clad women. If thats all you guys think about might as well live in Sodom or Gomorrah, or why not Rio de Janeiro? maybe for a vacation but otherwise not.

It must be a slow trade deadline if Raps fans are discussing this. lol.
But since we are, I've never been to NYC or Miami. I imagine NYC would be overwhelming for me but want to visit one day. Miami is the home of Scarface, nuff said. Been to Chicago. It's a nice city they did a great job on the lake front. However I read its total number of murders easily surpasses all of Canada. And Chicago seemed heavily segregated. I asked a Black lady working at the hotel where is it safe for me to walk. She said, "keep walking and it will become more Asian. That's okay. Then if you continue walking it will become a mix of Asian and Black. Around there turn back.". I don't know if this is true cause I never walked that far.
What makes Toronto unique is it's pretty safe all over. It's one of the safest large cities in the world.

NY >>>> Toronto, there is no question there. Toronto is so small in comparison, and if you're talking about the whole GTA, well, suburban crawl is definitely not a good thing.

A lot of people buy into the hype about this city or that city. The more I travel outside of Toronto, the happier I am to come back.

Some of u have it twisted.....for NBA players Miami is perfect, for the average citizen living in the inner city its probably not. NBA players can live by the beach, f*** beautiful exotic groupies every day and party all night. It's like living through Will Smith's Miami song every day...
Same with NYC, there is so much to do there for the wealthy..

Except not every player is into screwing and boozing all night, every night.
And you can pretty much drink and screw groupies in every NBA city.

What does the size of a city have to do with anything?

So is any other city with a tropical climate. That doesn't mean that every city that has beaches and palm trees is great to live in.

Miami is a complete dump in terms of a city. LA isn't a good city to live at all, and is pretty ****. Thats why everyone who has money that works in Miami or LA, doesn't live in the city. They live outside of the city.

It's pretty hard to "live outside LA" considering LA is a gigantic sprawl.

I used to live in Miami, and I tell everyone that there are 3 criteria you need to pass to enjoy living there.
1. Speak Spanish
2. Be a young adult without a family
3. Be rich
If you have 2 of those 3, you can get by alright. If you have all 3, you will love Miami. Any less, and meh.
However, being ridiculously rich kind of cancels out NBA players needing to speak spanish so much.
Pretty much, yeah, Miami kinda sucks for a regular citizen. But for someone with a huge amount of money, it is incredible.

OK first of all there is NOTHING trashy about LA. Even the ghetto's are pretty nice looking areas compared to the rest of the country. Second if you only vist a place once or twice you don't know much about a city to generalize it.

Re: OT: Miami, New York, Chicago - three of America's worst
I think every city in the world is overrated.
I've been to Paris. It's a total shithole, but the world wants you to believe that all the rioting and racism that goes on there is because it's so romantic. Paris is considered one of the the top two or three cities in the world, according to many reports, lists, and sources. I've been there and I hated it and now I laugh at people who insist on going to Paris like its some kind of mythical city of epic proportions, rather than a dirty tourist trap full of unspeakable poverty.
Torontonians believe that their city belongs in the same discussion as Tokyo, New York, and Paris one moment, and lament our miserable public transportation, insecure government, or extreme weather. People from Portland think their city is a charmer that will grow on you, akin to a tiny English village. People in Milwaukee find brewery tours fascinating and swear they rival being able to eat a hash-laced cookie while riding your bike to a fashion show in Amsterdam. People from Miami scoff at the high crime rate and possibly of being decimated by a hurricane and mention those beautiful gated beach houses and the girls in bikinis. If you're from Detroit, you might neglect to mention the crime and weather and will remind someone that Auburn Hills is one of the wealthiest areas in the world and that Detroit teams have a history of winning (you'd neglect to acknowledge the Lions).
Same ****, different pile. There is no definitive answer for why Bosh decides to go to Miami, or anywhere else for that matter, or even stay in Toronto. Sure, it's fun to speculate on, but to say Bosh will have a better time in Miami because it's hot, or will stay in Toronto because he owns property here, is just insane.

Never been to Chicago but why do you say its a better place than Toronto. The winters are as miserable there as they are here and the city is about the same size as Toronto. I agree with NY, the city is nicer and more lively as well as the weather is a bit better than we have here.
As a rich athlete however I think I would chose LA or Miami. You don't have to put up with the stuff this article talk about plus the weather is amazing.

Re: OT: Miami, New York, Chicago - three of America's worst
I've lived in a city that was named "#1 Place to live in America" and I've lived in Miami. I will take Miami any day of the week. Often times these lists put value in things that (to me at least) are irrelevant. Miami is not everyone's cup of tea and that's fine. But for that one poster to call it a third world city? You got to be kidding me. I can only assume he's a bigot who can't stand being in a city with a majority hispanic population which begs the question why he bothers to come here at all. Visit someplace more....homogeneous.

It's a very poorly judged "study" imo... for goodness sake, how could anyone possibly justify ranking St.-Louis as the 7th most miserable city to live in? Here's Forbes' argument:
St. Louis is a baseball town, but what about those Rams? The NFL team has won only six games out of 48 the past three years, the fewest wins in football.
...weak.
