Re: Official Scottie All Star Barnes Thread 8
An Oakley, Kevin Willis, Antonio Davis type big man vet would have been good for Barnes’ mental development from a boy to a man. Even a strong nosed coach like Casey or Smitch. However, at the end of the day we also need to stop making excuses and put the onus on him to act more mature.

I'm going to be real.
1. Barnes has an All NBA ceiling, higher than Siakam
2. Barnes is very unlikely to be a real first option for a contender, he might not even reach a #2 option.
3. We are very unlikely going to be drafting a player better than him.
Obviously Wemby was our best shot, even if the odds were very slim of landing the #1 pick that draft, but that train left the station.

People are feeling disappointed partially because he hasn't been that #1 option ISO scorer all the time in an ISO centric league. If they really want to build around this guy, they need to change roster philosophy.

                                    1. Scottie Barnes, Toronto Raptors
Barnes had a disappointing second season after winning the 2021-22 Kia Rookie of the Year award. But he’s taken a big step forward this season.
Barnes has averaged 37.6 points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks per 36 minutes, up from 29.7 per 36 last season. That’s the biggest jump among 265 players who’ve played at least 500 minutes in each of the past two seasons.
He’s seen the ninth-biggest jump among that group in points per 36 minutes (from 15.9 to 20.4) and the fifth-biggest jump in blocks per 36 minutes (from 0.8 to 1.5).
Barnes has also seen a significant jump in efficiency, registering a true shooting percentage of 56.6%, up from 52.4% last season. That’s the 26th biggest jump among 226 players with at least 200 field goal attempts in each of the past two seasons and the second biggest jump among 2024 All-Stars.

It's kind of funny, I was watching the OKC vs. Magic game yesterday and SVG and Shaq were doing colour commentary. They discussed JWill (I mean second year) as one of the leading candidates for most improved player. SVG actually mentioned Kuminga as his choice. The did not even mention Barnes, who I feel probably along with Maxey are the leading candidates for most improved player award.

Re: Official Scottie All Star Barnes Thread 8
I honestly think fans are too blinded by the moment with both Barnes and Masai. In both the good and the bad.
But since this is a Barnes thread i'll focus on him.
It's obvious that Barnes greatest strength is interior scoring, but his bag is still in the development stages.
It's also obvious Wemby is the one of the premier interior shutdown defender.
What basically happened in SA is Wemby had an All Timer type of night and there was nothing the Raptors could do. Barnes or no Barnes.
Keep in mind, Barnes is also the same guy that put up an efficient 24/10/10 against Cleveland the game before, one of the leagues top 5 defensive teams.
In the grander scheme of things, the game makes up for the win against the Rockets, as I both thought the Spurs game was an auto win and the Rockets were an auto lose.

Warning, I'm feeling cheeky - Scottie's as much of an all star as Jamal Magoire was at this point.

By that logic you can probably say that about every Raptors player other than Kawhi in the last several years lol (DeRozan, Lowry, Siakam, FVV)

Actually, I would say the only apt comparison to Magloire's selection is FVV. Deserving at the time but you just knew they would never be an All-Star ever again.

He's the worst Raptors to make it in that list, so probably. But at the end of the day, this fanbase needs you to be a top 5 player or they will bitch and all the players who mentioned for that category. They're all fringe.

What a trash player, lets ship him out and bring in some more hard nosed players. We don't want none of that "talent" stuff around here.
Any team in the league would cream their shorts getting Scottie, and here we have people claiming he's toxic, never going to be a #1, and all other manner of absolutes for a 22 year old. Even if Scottie never improves past his current level of productivity, that puts him in the upper echelon of NBA players. It's almost like a curse him taking such a big jump, now people pounce on every single misstep or blemish. This isn't a 29-30 year old player who is performing no different than 5 years prior, it's a 22 year old who just made massive jumps in his game after a single off season.
I sure saw a lot of people preaching patience with the previous insanely flawed core, yet now that oddly seems to have evaporated. Weird huh?

Props TZ!

That 3p% has really plummeted. But not much else you can ask from your 22 year old star.

Since January 1st he is shooting 28 percent from 3. I don’t think he’s necessarily that bad but obviously not as good as the 40 percent clip he was shooting during his hot stretch this season. Hoping he settles at 35-37 percent when it’s all said and done.

Not as many Pascal double team, swing for the Scottie open 3.
I'm not really worried. It's partially a talent/spacing issue.

Exceeded expectations. The TS% needs to improve though.

So far he's started each season hot and that seems to go longer and longer into the season so it's likely conditioning / his legs.
Almost wish he wasn't at the All-Star game so he could rest. ALMOST... but who cares about this season, so go enjoy it.
