Great. Gray's a 3rd string center who will start for us, and Fields is a guard and 6th man who'll start at SF. Who's next? Jamaal Tinsley as our backup PG?

Huh? Amir was our starter last year and JV is going to at least get heavy minutes this year if not be our starting C. Where did you get the idea he is our starting C and not our 3rd center? Share your intel.

Last year James Johnson was our starting SF. Fields is an upgrade considering he did start on the Knicks during his rookie year and played a role on a playoff team. Last year he didn't play as much SF which is best spot.

Try to have a perspective that this team has players that will play their respective roles well considering they will play their natural positions plus have internal competition to stay on top of their game.

Not so fast. The Fields nightmare continues!

According to his agent Mark Bartelstein, G/F Alan Anderson has re-signed with the Raptors.
There are no specific details about the length of the contract, but Anderson is set to return to Toronto on the veteran's minimum salary, where he averaged a career-high 9.6 ppg and 2.0 rpg and 1.4 3PMg in 17 games last season. Anderson actually started 12 games at SF last year for the Raptors, however Toronto plans to try DeMar DeRozan at SF this season after signing Landry Fields to play SG. Anderson will probably need an injury to be fantasy-relevant.

My God what titanic signings Colangelo has gifted us this off-season. With Gray/Anderson/Lucas leading the helm this year, there's absolutely no way we aren't getting that coveted 8th seed.

I've been sleepless for nights thinking there's a chance we won't get slaughtered by the Heat in the 1st round, but all of my fears have been assuaged.

Gray started 40 games for us last year at C, Amir had more starts at PF, and he is far more natural as a PF. Neither of them is remotely close to being a solid starting center on a playoff team.

If Jonas is our starting center then that is one of the most short-sighted moves our inept GM could force on the team. He's worried about losing his job and needs a playoff team, but runs the risk of rushing Jonas and hurting his development. Jonas will be a foul factory for his first couple years if he has to play too much, and he might get both trigger shy and abused on defense by veterans.

Fields is an upgrade over James Johnson, true. Fields played his best ball as a guard on the Knicks. Not as a small forward. The Knicks had Gallinari and Chandler at the time and Landry did not play ahead of them. The lines can be blurred a bit, especially with D'Antoni, but Fields's natural position is more as a 2 than a 3. He was a great rebounder for a 2, much less so as a 3. Though he will probably out-rebound Andrea. He is ideally suited as a 6th man backing up both wing spots. He will be better defensively at the 2 than the 3.

For the most part, I do not believe Bryan Colangelo makes decisions on who starts and who comes off the bench.

Dwane Casey has said that he believes Jonas will be ready to make a major contribution to the team right from the start.

I don't think anyone expect Jonas to begin the season as the starting center - that will probably be Gray.

But I think it is certainly possible that he will be the starting center by the end of the season.

Being the starting line-up, that's a very balanced attack of no defense and no 3s.

I like it.

But Colangelo does make the deals that put players on the team and those are the players Casey has to use. Jonas may make a "major contribution" but that is intentionally vague. I'm not saying Jonas can't play 20 mpg his rookie year and play relatively well, I think it might be in his best interests - and ours - to limit his playing time until he learns the game better. But as we've said, we are in win-now mode, with an eye on the playoffs, yet Colangelo hasn't acquired the type of players we need to make a legitimate run at the playoffs. We are attempting to make the playoffs with only 2 guys who are starting calibre players on playoff level teams, Lowry and Bargnani.

I guess you are just being cautiously pessimistic. It's your prerogative, but you may be underestimating JV's talent and the contribution of savvy vet like Fields. I still see better bench depth then last year, plus a soft schedule that should mean a very strong chance at the playoffs with a good development of young players along the way.
