He’s a shot maker! Makes a lot of difficult mid range shots. I wonder if the Raps will continue to let him take those shots or if they will phase them out of his game.

If you let him take those shots there will definitely be nights where they’re not falling. I doubt he can make those at an efficient enough rate over a season. That said, the raps don’t have a mid range scorer and sometimes those are the only shots a defence will give up.

It will be interesting to follow his development and see if the Raps let him be who he is or try to mold him into their type of offensive player - 3’s and layups.

Raps will let him be who he is, which is basically, take whatever the game is giving you. And the Raps have been subtly changing their game to add in more mid-range shots. OG has started taking them, Boucher too, Malachi has it in his game and GTJ. Team is adjusting on the fly.
Everybody is losing their freaking minds. Nutbars and wingnuts have infested this forum. We've become a public lavatory without cleaning staff.

Yes, if an elite defence is only giving you open 2s, you have to be able to make them. CP3 is going to the HOF in part because of his ability to find separation 16-18 feet from the basket, and bury those shots. Of course, Kawhi is a master of the mid-range J.

To me, the most interesting guy to watch is OG. He seems to be hitting turnaround jumpers WAY better than Pascal. Not sure he'll ever have the handles to become the Kawhi-level player we all want/need him to be. But the fact that he's clearly been working on his game bodes well for the future.

Question - can Pascal and OG co-exist? Ideally yes, because Pascal is a special two-way talent when his conditioning and rhythm is there (which is hasn't been for a year). But If Pascal is the anointed "superstar" - along with Trent emptying the clip at every opportunity - will OG be able to become the best version of himself?

It seems he's really working on creating space for himself to get a good shot up. This should be an encouraging thing due to the fact we don't have anyone who can do that. I believe in Trent. Good game or bad, you can really see his potential on both sides of the ball. And the thing is, he seems like the type who will work to unlock his potential. Raptors fans should be excited.

No idea what their cap situation is, but someone mentioned in the General Board that Pelicans should make a run at stealing GTJ. Imagine if they get rid of Bledsoe and GTJ slots in with Lonzo, Ingram, Zion, and Adams/Hayes moving forward? Scary core that’ll be a problem for years to come. GTJ’s perimeter shooting fits in way better for them than what Bledsoe gives them.

GTJ will be a RFA, so we can match any offer, but I wonder what our FO threshold is.

Pelicans supposedly has about 19M in cap space if they renounce all their cap holds include Lonzo: https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cap/2021/

My guess is they will keep Lonzo instead of losing him for nothing. Maybe if New York offered Lonzo a huge contract then Pelicans doesn't match, and moves towards GTJ instead.

Even then if I'm reading the cap sheet correctly, and they only have 19M in cap space and offered that, I would match it if I'm the Raps. Not happily, but I do think he's a good player, and we obviously don't want to lose him for nothing.

San Antonio might be another team that goes after him rather than keeping Demar. Gary also looks like the younger better looking brother of Patty Mills .

People underestimate just how bad that Cavs team is.

No conclusions should be drawn from that game.

Huh? The Raptors have played 53 games this season.

(The most-used lineup without Lowry this year has been: A. Baynes, .N. Powell, .P. Siakam, .F. VanVleet, .O. Anunoby.
NetRTG: -17.7)

That first name on the list is the problem and you know it. Baynes clogs the lane for Siakam and Fred and can’t even finish when they dump off to him. And on the defensive end... well, you know.

Reserve judgement for when this team gets a C.

Exactly. Every lineup with Baynes is atrocious. It doesn't matter who he's on the floor with lol. You substitute him for Boucher and it's a completely different story

Yep. The team is useless when Baynes is on the floor. There are absolutely no redeeming qualities he offers, other than the unintentional comedy.

It’s moves like this that get me excited about a potential big line up where it’s Fred, OG, Siakam, Boucher, Competent C. OG and Siakam would feast on opposing SG. If they try to hide the SG on Boucher at the 3 point line, immediate PnR with Fred for a lob.

Lateral Quicks wrote:Various Raptors have had games like Trent just had through the years. Terrence Ross comes to mind. You can't evaluate a player based on their best game.

Trent is a very 3-point shooter, which is the most valuable skill in today's NBA. So he's going to get paid. But as of now he's rather one-dimensional and the advanced stats aren't complimentary of him on defense.

He's only 22 so he can still improve, but this is also his 4th year in the league and he hasn't shown much improvement to date. We can use the offense, but there's a good chance his contract will prove to be a big overpay. A sign-and-trade is probably a better option.
I get the point you're trying to make, but Ross had a 51-point game on 76 TS% and never scored 30+ in any of his other ~400 games with Toronto. Trent already has a few +30-point games, one of which was the highly efficient 44-point game last night, and won a game for us at the buzzer in less than 3 weeks.

Trent is also in his 3rd year, but he played just 15 games -- averaging 7.4 MPG -- in his rookie season. He's more like a sophomore than in his 4th year. And to say he hasn't shown improvement is wrong. He scored 10+ twice in his first 25 games then 10+ 6 times in the next 25 games. He started to breakout near the end of last season in the bubble (averaged 13 PPG on 47% shooting) and has carried that over this year, averaging 15.5 PPG while scoring 10+ in 37 of 50 games. Even more recently, he has set a new career-high twice in his limited time with Toronto while displaying a pretty wide range of scoring ability and 42% of his FGM have been unassisted.

Besides the lethal midrange and perimeter shooting night, I was pleasantly surprised by the couple of field goals he had in the paint as well. Granted, at least one was fed very nicely by Malachi to Gary in stride, but I really couldn’t recall any Portland highlights of GTJ besides perimeter shooting.

This opportunity to shine away from the shadow of Dame and CJ really is going to help his bank account a ton! Conversely, I hope the trade doesn’t affect Norm getting paid too much this off-season.

I coulda swore this was one of those face mash type pictures. A bald GTJ with badly photoshopped hair in the background of the photo.
