By trading Bane, long part of the core in Memphis with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., Kleiman is acting on those words.
But more star trades are not expected. Sources told ESPN that the Grizzlies are not looking to deal either of their two remaining franchise cornerstones. The team has spent the past several months clearing salary cap space to complete a renegotiation and extension of Jackson's contract this offseason, preventing him from hitting free agency in 2026. The belief is that an extension will get done, sources said. But the Bane trade gives Memphis an avenue to give Jackson even more on that deal and lock him in long term.
And Memphis handing the team to coach Tuomas Iisalo -- who wants to play a fast-paced system with tons of pick-and-roll and 3-point shooting -- is designed to maximize what Morant can do.
The Grizzlies believe Jaylen Wells, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting this past season as a second-round pick, can be a long-term starter on the wing, sources said. And among the haul of picks they received in the trade, the most attractive was next year's lesser of Phoenix and Washington -- a pick that's very likely to be a lottery pick, and could easily wind up inside the top 10, or better.

Re: [Charania] Desmond Bane To Orlando For KCP, Cole Anthony, 4 Unprotected 1st Round Picks And 1 Pick Swap
You get one shot when you make a trade like this that gives up control/flexibility of your picks for the next few years.
I'm not sure Bane is the right guy to target, but the success of the deal will likely hinge on whether Banchero emerges as a legit #1 guy, which is what ORL need him to be if they want to make a run.
Deal is similar to the Knicks move for Bridges. Bridges is a nice piece, but the Knicks are still going as far as Brunson leads them. I'm not a huge fan of pushing most of your chips in for a 2nd/3rd tier option, especially if you're still unsure if you have the #1 guy in place. But if it results in a conference finals or two, it's still probably worth it for the Magic who haven't had much success in their history.

I agree with this route, jazz thought they were being smart trading Donovan Mitchell when he was young, its been 3 years already and no sign of them getting back close to the same level. Sometimes it's just ok to be ok and hope to catch lighting and be lucky.

Lost in all the criticism of the price they paid is that a conference rival got better. Clearly better. KCP was trash for them last season, and by all accounts wasn't happy and only went there because they offered him the most money.
They landed a 20/5/5 high character guy, without giving up anyone significant from their rotation. That's always a win. At some point you have to ride or die with your core.
Further proof that everyone feels the East is wide open next season.

I know it’s a (very) bad idea, but I’d take Ja.
Would sure make things interesting.

haha, sort of a "Lol **** IT" type attitude.
Morant / Barnes / Ingram would be a fun trio. Not sure they're going too deep in the playoffs. But whatever...

Ask yourself this..
What makes "superstar" Devin Booker better then Desmond Bane exactly?
-Desmond Bane is WAY more efficient across the board
-Way more lethal, efficient, high volume 3pt shooter then Booker.
-He's also a WAY BETTER defender then Booker.
Bane can also self create off the dribble hes not restricted as a pure 3+D but can do both -- play as a star and role player.
Can Devin Booker play as a role player when needed for the good of the team?
Consider all the above and what it would cost to acquire Booker off reputation and tell me if the Bane trade was still an overpay.
Go check Bookers numbers and you may be shocked, hes probably the most overrated player in the league.
Every team he's been on has sucked besides the couple yrs Chris Paul showed up so he doesn't really drive winning either.
opposing coaches have booker as the #1 guy to gear your defense against. bane is probably 3rd behind ja and jjj. huge difference. one is the driving force on offense, the other plays off two other guys.
Sounds more like excuses and serious cope.
Hasn't he been playing with Durant for yrs? and the best team in the league for a couple seasons before that?
I dont remember Booker being swarmed with double teams his whole career.
He's overrated, and even if you wanted account some significance to that (which isnt fair to Bane as a hypothetical) Bane is ALOT more efficient and has been his entire career.
He does get swarmed with double teams, here's proof.

I don't but that he is one the market. I think Griz were just unloading a big contract to create more future flexibility, with the team focused around two max contracts in Ja and JJJ.
They just moved Bane at peak value, for peak price.

MEM has been one of the best drafting teams in the league, so I can see why they'd value the flexibility of all those picks while being able to lock up Ja/JJJ long term.
For their sake, hopefully they don't waste those picks on another Smart type trade.

He's not "Poeltl lever pretty much" at all. Bad take. Sorry Duff.
We are talking about Goga, not Poeltl.
Take Bruce Brown as an example, he thrieved with the nuggets alongside jokic, but was rather meh since then.

Maybe I'll say he's 75% of Poeltl. His per36 metrics are great, he passes the eye test and Magic fans rave about him.
So maybe 'pretty much' was a bit strong?

He put up 7/7/2 with 2.1 stocks in just 20 minutes a game on 61% from the field.
A bunch of advanced metrics show him pretty much inline with what Poeltl does.
I like Poeltl a lot but saying Goga is pretty much the same impact and in the same tier is not a bad take.
Yes, with a better players around him, thats why be careful what you wish for.
Take Bruce Brown for an example, thrieved with jokic, so-so since then.
There are lot of those type of players and Goga is one of them.

Hey, if goga comes here and is equal or better than Jak, i am all for it. I just saw too many hyped roleplayers in the league, that then disappointed in their new role.

Franz is their best player. The combination of him and Banchero on offence should be pretty good, but they both need to show some improvement (Banchero hasn't really added much to his game since entering the league).

A Ja/JJJ core is a perennial first round exit team. Memphis needs to rebuild, or figure out how to add an actual difference maker.
