ATLTimekeeper wrote:Givony's recent piece about teams quitting on prospects within their rookie deal seems to be pointing to teams hedging with more mature college players. Essentially the draft extends well beyond the draft into 2 ways/UDFAs now. Teams seem to know if a player will blow up or not into a core piece by the end of year 2, or it happens so rarely that players blow up on other teams that they can risk cutting bait and trying again.

Also underclassmen now getting paid leads to maybe better decision-making re entering the draft. I dunno if true, but if you're looking for cheap role players than drafting a junior or senior seems like a good way to go about it rather than a freshman who mostly stinks for a few years before being just okay for their career. We've yet to see FRPs really embrace a season or two in the Gleague to develop. They might go down for a bit, but not like commit to a multi-year development process.

I stated something similar in another thread. It's a smart risk management policy.

That's why Sasser was a no brainer to acquire with a late 1st we surely could have found a way to obtain for GTJ straight up or possibly along with another small asset.

It would similarly make sense to try to dump Boucher in exchange for a 2nd round pick to select DaRon Holmes.

An energy big on an expiring salary who can grab offensive boards and make an occasional three should bring back a 2nd. Holmes is projecting as late 1st/early 2nd on many boards just now, so we have a shot at him with the Detroit pick, meaning any pick coming back for Boucher might be better in a future draft.

Rapsfan07 wrote:Definitely should be Carter or Smith. Carter is much more of a sure thing IMO and short of a horrible injury or some unforeseen thing, he should have a long and quality NBA career. I don't think you can ask for more than that from the middle of the first round.

He reminds me of a better shooting, more athletic Marcus Smart.

I initially liked Carter at 31 and maybe even at 17, but not sure if he's the best prospect available there. He has a decent floor, but has a definite ceiling offensively. I think Smart may be a better one on one defender against guards, better communicator and better at chasing around screens whereas Carter's advantages are arm length and verticality which translates to steals, blocks, deflections and rebounds. Wouldn't be a bad back-up to IQ, but if a player like Castle is at the Indiana spot, I think you take him.

Hot take, but I like Castle's potential more than most players, including Cody/Holland. He needs a lot of polishing and maybe 2-3 years of work to starting reaching his potential. Castle's mock range goes from 6 to 23.

Dalek wrote:This seems like the GIannis draft where people see a down draft and are pegging a lot of older prospects in the top 20. How many +20 year-old guys were there in the DX/ESPN ranking? Kind of interesting to note that even some of the freshmen are close to 20 or will be 20 by the draft.

I think we will inevitably see a few Bruno/Giannis types who were not ranked high but some front office takes a swing on. This draft feel ripe for some wild swings. Ulirch Comche and Bub Carrington are two that I think will crack top 20.

It's gonna end up being an international guy like Salaun, Buzelis, Wang, Chomche, Ivisic, Rubstavicius, Prey, Perrin, Nunez who ends up being a hidden gem.

Pluses:
-Having a good freshman year overall
-Very athletic for a 5
-Can put it on the deck more than a typical center
-Rebounding might be improvable when he gets stronger in the legs/base
-Finishing at a high rate inside

Minuses:
-Meh rebounder
-Old for a freshman
-Meh FT shooter
-Baylor is terrible on D and to me that matters for a center (for them, fairly crummy generally)

Ivisic is 7'2 and mobile.

Pacers pick: Furphy, Tyler Smith or Ivisic. I guess maybe get someone that drops to them as it might be close to the #13 pick.

I don't really have a take (maybe after the tourney), but from what I've seen Ivisic is a typical center in terms of mobility, right? And Missi is a plus in that regard. Massive shooting and size gap, though, obviously.

Agree with the last part. Feels like someone will "drop" to us with this draft being weaker and so less difference between prospects.
Where's the D?

Tyler Smith would be uber mobile but "only" 6'11.

Ivisic looks like Kristaps Porzingis 2.0, but hopefully more healthy.

Look at all the smiles!!! Looks like he's having fun out there. :D

I find it hard to believe Salaun would be available at 26. But if he's available at the Pacers pick, that is going to be incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to draft him.

Wow most I like have moved up except for Ivisic. Wow Castle at #22. :o

Pacers pick: Salaun( dropped), Castle (dropped), Tyler Smith, Furphy, Ivisic

#32 Ivisic, Bub Carrington, Dillon Jones

Maybe he'll grow. Is is legit 6'9" without shoes? Salaun looks like Highschool Blake Griffin that can shoot the 3. Griffin has greater hops but Salaun has a longer wingspan to make up the diff. The ferocity of dunks is similar. He'll still be 18 at the draft! If he grows another inch or 2, we're talking Giannis with a jumper.

If Salaun started playing organized basketball when he was 7 and he's still this slow in the head and uncoordinated, that's a massive red flag.

He's a major major project who needs to refine virtually every element of his game, most difficultly his basketball IQ which is remarkably lower than almost the entirety of current NBA players when they were 18. The tape doesn't lie, you routinely see him out there completely unsure of himself, his positioning and what he needs to be doing with his body, hands and feet.

Yup, he's 2 years from being 2 years away. But so was Giannis and Salaun looks like he'll be able to shoot the 3 better.

Giannis put up 6.8, 12.7 and 16.9, his first 3 seasons. Even if you have to give him 1 whole season playing 75% with the 905. He has high arc on his 3 and has NBA distance already and shoots FTs at almost 80% so the foundation looks higher that Giannis pre-draft.

Pascal spent 4 years in college and his first 3 years were 4.2, 7.3 and then 16.9 at age 24.

Gradey has shown he's ready to ascend as a 19 year old, but the Raptors are okay to develop a project for 2-3 years.

At #32 can pickup a more ready rotation player like Dillon Jones, Tyler Kolek or Huter Sallis.

I have a feeling Castle's stock will deeply be tied with UConn's tournament run, as Wasserman says.

If he really has an impressive run more teams will say to themselves "ok, this kid is so talented that even if we need to play him as a wing and he loses his positional size advantage we believe in his slashing and defense enough and that his scoring efficiency will come around that we can justify taking him really high".

Pascal didn't start playing basketball until 17 years old.

Salaun has been playing in some capacity since 7.

Ivisic looks like a good player that needs more minutes. If we were to come out of the draft with Salaun, Collier, and Ivisic it would be a good stable of future role players.

Salaun with the Pacer's pick and Ivisic with #32! :o Oh if we keep our pick and draft Reed Sheppard #6. :D

PG Quickley - Reed/JFL
SG Dick - Reed/Carton
SF Barrett - Agbaji - Nwora
PF Barnes - Barrett - Jontay/Salaun
C Poeltl/Olynyk - Ivisic

Darko probably will be back next year. We see how he emphasized on passing, off ball movement etc. Guys like Salaun just doesn’t look like someone who can get playing time under Darko.

Return to Toronto Raptors
