the ppl who "think they can do better than Lee and Gallinari"
for some of us it's not a case of those players in a vacuum, it's more of the further commitment of long term contracts to all the big money guys, since I presume Lee will come with a 5 year contract. That means Lee/Bargs/Hedo/Jose/Jack core is all locked in a for a long time.
One of the better things about taking expirings or preferably a couple of rookie contracts back is it make the tetris game of fixing our roster much more flexible.
I mean theoretically would you want to have 4 years+ committed to Jose/Hedo/Bargs/Lee as your starters? That's up to 45 million per year locked in for a long time and you think that lineup is going to scare anyone?
We need more cheap talent in here.
Then again BC has never given a crap about loading up on rookie contracts. We treat our own 1st round picks like dog food and never go and buy other ppl's 1sts. And forget about thinking of taking a bunch of flyers on 2nd rounders.

Re: D Smith: Bosh for Lee, Gallo (Update pg 9)
Teams with cap space:
Will not be giving up any real key assets. They have the room to take him on. It may be a draft pick and a player that Bosh will take time from, or a contract they just don't want. Teams like Chi, NYK, Miami etc will NOT be giving up a ton of assets back in a S&T
Teams with no cap space:
If Bosh wants to go to LA, Houston, Dallas etc. These are teams who can't sign him out right and need to trade assets to get him in return (meaning they have to match contracts coming back to contract within 10% +/- of the value going to those teams). Therefore these are teams in which BC can put a strangle hold on and ask for their good assets.
So as Raptors fans if we want any real value back for Bosh, lets HOPE that he wants to go to a team WITHOUT cap space.

Since when does Weems bring any kind of defense to the court anyway?

Totally agree with you here. I've said last year Colangelo made a huge mistake when he acquried Hedo and gave an early extension to Bargnani (when there was no need to do it, he should have let him become a RFA this summer). I even think he should have traded Bosh in 2009 for a lottery pick and additional assets. Memphis wanted a PF and they traded for Zach Randolph. They had the #2 pick, cap space and expiring contracts. The Raps could have traded Bosh and Jose for their lottery pick, a trade exception and Darko Milicic's expiring contract. I think Lee would have made sense for the Raps one year ago with their cap space. If Colangelo traded Bosh for a lottery pick (and selected Tyreke Evans) and acquired Lee with his $9 million cap space (Lee would have commanded less money last year), the Raps would be in a much better position this summer. Lee and Bargnani wouldn't be a good frontcourt but the Raps could have traded Bargnani easily if they didn't extend his contract.
Just like you I don't think the Raptors should have Jose/Hedo/Bargnani/Lee eating all their salary cap. At this point, they don't need another long term contract like Lee. I was just talking about people thinking it's not good enough in terms of talent and they expect more for Chris Bosh while he's totally unrestricted.

So if they get close to the best ever return in max. contract sign and trade history and you will stop supporting the team?
You might not like the players individually but it's still as good of a return as there will be out there (personally I don't even think the Knicks would do this trade) and Lee and Gallo would both be very valuable trade chips in the future, I would hate to see Bosh in the division but this seems liek a no-brainer if bosh wants out.
I think if this went down, Lee would be a very useful trading chip right now, we could make it a 3-way with Miami, Chicago, or New Jersey to get another 1st (#18 or our pick back, #17, or #27) and/or a prospect (Beasley, Asik, TWill/Lee/CDR) along with the big TPE (which we can use to get an overpaid player, or a prospect in a salary dump--Collison?).
With Bosh now being taken out of the market, Lee's value goes up, and we increase the return we get by extracting one more piece of value from each team we include, maximizing the return on our asset in what would otherwise be a situation where we don't have much leverage. Walking away with Gallinari, Asik/Beasley, and potentially Collison (via the TPE) would be more return than any one team would ever be willing to offer, and would give us all kinds of flexibility moving forward with young players on rookie deals, picks, expiring contracts, and the MLE to spend. Such a move would have a far better 'worst-case outcome' than taking on another bloated contract in a win-now move that would cripple our team in the future.

Re: D Smith: Bosh for Lee, Gallo (Update pg 9)
Everyone has 20/20 hinsight. Jose was a bad signing, so was Andrea, so was Hedo, and we should have traded Bosh last year, and, and, and... Maybe we should have traded Jose after the 07 season and kept TJ. Maybe we should have kept Kapono? Maybe we should have drafted Dwayne Wade instead Chris Bosh. Maybe, we should have never let Vince go to that graduation ceremony? Can people move on and stop professing that they knew all the moves BC made we bad?
There were a lot of pieces that needed to fall in place for the Raptors to do well last season. No where in any of the dealings was a 2nd star available to BC. Hedo was the best player the Raptors could have hoped for, and if Hedo played like the 17ppg/5rpg/5apg player, that would have more than satisfied me.
Take a look at the end of the roster at the end of last year, and the beginning of this year. I can't immagine that there is a single poster that feels that the team was not significantly improved on paper from last year to this year. It just did not pan out for us this year as planned, but the future is not bleak because of our roster.
