Re: Terrence Ross's 3 point shooting

Post#341 » by Anatomize » Fri Nov 30, 2012 1:23 am

I said this in the post game thread last night, so I might as well put it here as It's more appropriate.

A lot of people were talking about Ross' quick release, but again, I'm just not seeing it. He has a slow smooth release that he brings up from too low, He should have his arms ready a bit higher on the catch so he can quickly bring it up trigger. I find the biggest problem with Ross' release is that it allows too much time for the defenders to recover on his shot after he makes his initial move or catch on the cut.

Here's another stat for you. Our knock down shooter is also 0-3 from the line this year. I don't know whats worse. That he only has 3 free throw attempts or that he hasn't hit a free throw yet?

For now, he should be taking corner threes, anywhere else, he should: a) drive, b) use that semi-crossover he has

Too early in his career to tell IMO. He would have a much better shooting percentage if he didn't force his offense so much. I don't really care about his shooting as much as other parts of his game, shooting comes and goes and we all knew there would be some adjustment time to the NBA. He's already a better defender than DeMar IMO.

highness wrote:So we drafted Ross due to his nba readiness and his shooting. But he's currentl y shooting 28% from three (10-36) not to mention he shot 25% from 3 in summer league. I mean even DeRozan (shout out to Demar!) who is known to be a very poor 3 point shooter is currently shooting better from 3 at 32% (8-25) and everyone's other favorite rookie AUSTIN FREAKING RIVERS is even shooting better from 3 at 36% (9-25). Should we be concered? He's being advertised as a knockdown shooter and he does have a nice looking stroke (no homo) but his stats so far this year and in summer league have proved otherwise. Can it just be a case of adjusting to the nba 3 point line?

The bolded part destroyed whatever shred of credilbility there might have been in this post and I stopped reading with a screeching halt right there. WTF didn't realize you were 14 years old, makes a ton of sense though!

I just don't see him being a fit beside Demar (they're both to undersized for the Forward spot), i like him as a prospect (especially his first step and vertical) but one will eventually need to be moved in order for the other to get decent playing time, similar to the Ed-Amir situation.

In reference to your sig, I'd also point out that Bargnani tends to get sick often because his white blood cells arrive late on rotations to help his red blood cells.

Watch the play at 0:28 when he runs off the double-staggered catching the ball right from his hips where his shooting pocket is at which is the perfect place for a shooter to catch and get into his shooting motion with the pickup. Kevin Martin has an even lower pickup and he's had no problems getting his shot off.

No, but he has better NBA skills than DeRozan, that's for sure.

Does he really? He was supposed to be NBA ready but his shot isn't as great as advertised.

4-13 , 0-6 from 3 , 0-2 from the free throw line in his latest attempt. A lot of the misses were wide open as well.

We should be very concerned. Guy is nowhere as good as people have been hyping him up to be. Sadly on this board we just have to overrate everyone..

This is the one game he had it going.. watching his other games where he struggled with his perimeter shot it looked slow.. that's an extremely smooth release and a nice looking jumpshot, I don't argue that. You alluded to NBA defenders being much quicker to recover and it's something I pointed out in that post as well.

In the NBA if you want to be a deadly jump shooter you will need a lightning quick release (ala Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, Korver, Ray Allen, Kapono etc). To me, Ross just doesn't stand out from your average perimeter shooters in terms of the quickness of his release. I like his readiness on the catch and his off-ball movement, I also like his ability to set up his own shot, he has a pretty good idea how to get it off versus a defender. Consistency should come with time, but he doesn't stand out to me right now as someone who's going to be a superb perimeter shooter over his career. The funny thing is if you look at the previous named I mentioned, they were all amazing shooters from year 1; they understand that's the strength of their game, and utilize their shooting ability through superior off-ball cutting, being ready on the catch, as well as shooting off the pick or hand off screen. Ross has some of those strengths of a ready catch and shoot guy, but I don't think he possesses the shot type to be that guy.

To be honest, I'm still not sold on what his exact strength is. Ross currently looks like a decent role player to me at best. He appears to have a little bit of everything, but still lacks a lot of things. I don't think for a wing player he's super young either given where his skill set is at right now, nor does he look very NBA ready given what we've heard. That's a concern for me in terms of his ceiling as a prospect.

Ray Allen brings it up from low as well, he has hands slightly centered together below his crotch area but he brings it up so quick and releases so quick that his shooting pocket doesn't hinder him. If Martin relied solely on a jumpshot, he would be depth player, but he has a strong all around offensive game because he gets to the line and converts at a high rate. Martin is also getting a lot of open looks this year due to the attention his teammates demand. Martin has a smooth jumpshot, but also slow. One way he gets a lot of shots off is that he often will trail down court or run down with the ball and pull up before the defense is set. Ross doesn't have that kind of green light to shoot yet, so when he's in a half court offense the defense is usually right there to recover on his shot, especially because we have no exceptional players that the defense gravitates to, allowing him more open looks.

Makes sense. I agree with you actually.

As for Martin, I don't think he has a slow release. He loves shooting out of that right-to-left front change picking the ball up below his hips, but when he transitions the ball from his hips to his shooting elbow it's lightning quick. Then again he has a low release so his range of motion is little lol.

If Ross can carve out a more athletic Aaron Afflalo type career I would be pretty happy. That seems to me like the type of mold he can fit into, particularly the way he shoots and plays, where he doesn't exactly stand out as a prospect/talent, but he's a nice piece to have on a team. Will need a lot of work sculpting his body to get there though.

I'm still skeptical of Ross but wouldn't mind Casey giving him minutes to prove himself as this season will be a farce.

So far he's been a one game wonder. Even in the game against Houston he shoot 9-17 but 4 FGs of which were dunks. I guess you can talk about potential: athletic, energetic defense, smooth jumper off curl. The again any lottery pick will have x attributes to raise the "potential" argument. Even with the latter point, I don't think he'll justify a 8th pick.

The GB has a Ross thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1216041&start=30. Non-Raptors are more cynical about him but they are unbiased. Then again they might be not well informed as they probably only saw the Raps when they played against their team.

To sum it up again, I've been quite unimpressed but want to see him get more minutes to prove himself.

He just needs to stop shooting at any given look

I noticed that sometimes he's open in the corner, but the defense recovers to contest the shot and Ross ends up bricking it badly. Use a pumpfake and get a better look.

That thread shows a lot of support for Ross by non-Raptor fans. Most of the negative stuff is about passing on Drummond or just general Raptor hate.
