Can't expect the guys without contracts to play. If you did, you're completely naive. Wiggins and Stauskas on the other hand..

France is out Gobert, Mahimni, Fournier and possibly Batum. Disagree on the last part, great chance this tourney.

Didn't realize that, then there is a chance. Canada could make everyone proud if they bring it home anyway, might make some of the other guys notice and change dedicate themselves for the Olympics.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
Screw these fake Canadians. Don't give me this crap about contracts, you go somewhere else in the world, people would DIE for the chance to rep their country.
This is embarrassing. This is embarrassing for the players that they don't give a shot about the country they were born and raised in. This is embarrassing for the country to show that not even Canadians care about Canada. This is embarrassing even for the program not to keep these guys in the program.
Guys like LeBron served in the US program for several Olympics even if he knew it was gonna be a wash, he wasn't too good for the opportunity. Does Wiggins think he's too good to play for us?
Much respect to Joseph for being there, rest of them, I won't be cheering for them anymore.

Nobody's going for the olympics anyway. They could qualify and I bet half the guys wouldn't go down to Brazil. Focus on 2020.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
So many hateful posts.
Wiggins has participated at every level of the national program. When canada called, he answered. Same can be said for stauskus.
Wiggins wanting to be the best player in the world will only help canada in the future.
These are probably the same posters that destroy val for playing on his national team.

Man, you all are a bit salty. I take it you don't want Wiggins to leave Minnesota and play for Toronto anymore?

Not true. Both Wiggins and Stauskas have chosen not to rep Canada more times than they chose to. They each have skipped many world events.

Half the potential US players are staying home as well. This is not an uncommon thing.

He's skipping a qualifying tournament in the Philippines. We're not even talking about the Olympics yet; Zika is not an excuse here.

Still, that being the case, it seems that the amount of vitriol spilled is a bit excessive. He's a 21 year old kid, trying to prove himself to an entirely new (and demanding) regime. I'm sure that in the years to come he will be killing it for Canada on an international playing field, and hopefully people will regret saying such hateful ****.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
I think the reason why so many people are upset is that this was really the best opportunity for Team Canada to have a shot at playing in the Olympics (well, after last year's tourney which was really the best chance). With the changing FIBA rules for Olympics qualification, it's quite possible that Wiggins, Stauskas, etc. never actually get another chance to play for Team Canada again.
If they're in the NBA, they won't get the chance to participate in any qualification games over the next few years, and without our best players, we may not even qualify for 2020 or 2024. With all of the talk in the past couple of years about the Golden Age for Canadian hoops, including a lot of talk by some of these guys who are choosing not to play, it may result in exactly zero Olympic games played for guys like Wiggins, Lyles, Stauskas, etc.
Contrast this with Giannis, who has confirmed to play for Greece for their qualifying tournament. Wiggins and Giannis are two guys who are basically at the same point in their careers. People are maybe being a little harsh on some of these guys, but I can certainly understand the frustration.

I bet some other Raptor players other CoJo would have put on the red and white to rep Canada. Wiggins is just of one those coddled stars who will never know how to win.
Much respect to CoJo.

Ali didn't go to Vietnam and America hated him for it. In a decade, Wiggins will be hailed as a hero. He is on the path to greatness.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
Bunch of jilted lovers in here... I guess the real question is... why does Wiggins owe you anything?
If anything he is showing loyalty to the people that put food on his table.
Who cares who wins a gold medal?
NBA > Charity Basketball Games > International Tournies
At least with charity games less fortunate people get to benefit from the athlete taking a risk by playing in a meaningless game.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
Nobody should be surprised by this.
Steve Nash "Kid Canada" (Ya Right) wanted nothing to do with this team as soon as he became relevant.
Wiggins is just following Nash's playbook to a T. I don't expect him to ever suit up for Canada again.
