Just thinking out loud here but if say Lowry signs for 13 mill a year would it still be feasible to sign Nando, Vasquez and PPat to deals without going over the luxury tax?

If we sign Lowry to 13mil+, we are basically losing either 2-3 of Vasquez, Nando, Patterson or MLE. There is no reason to go into the luxury with this team, none. It would be stupid and be a waste of money. You have to remember that these players are RFA, they will likely get offers from other teams.

You also have to remember that Ross and Valanciunas won't be on rookie deals forever and DeRozan might be looking for big raise as well. AND this team still needs loads of talent aside from what it already has. And locking in Lowry at too much money might hinder those processes.

Note: This only works up until the point where you reach the max. Once you reach the max salary you can kiss the player goodbye because all teams can offer the max.

This is why we will build around tier 2 and tier 3 stars and why we will overpay to keep them. Accept this. You know it to be true even if you wish it wasn't.

Reverse that. Nobody wants to go to NY. Also taxes in Canada are lower than NY and California for Sports Athletes. Taxes only suck for Canadians. Corporate taxes in Canada are much lower than the US except in Montana and DC and a few other cases.

What does corporate tax have to do with this?

Most people who make this type of money don't file income taxes like guys at Walmart. They also aren't Canadian citizens or even year round residents. The tax stuff is overblown.

Agents argue for salary based on position comparisons, his agent would be comparing what he makes vs other PGs, not vs a guy who plays a different position on his own team.

For my. Ty Lawson is probably the best measuring stick in terms of impact and age..he makes about 11.5 per? Which I guess is about in line with what you said, I think considering everything 4/44 is the highest I'd go.

Players perform in contract years. Players also get injured, players decline, players lose motivation after signing a big contract. I'm not saying those are things that will happen to Lowry, they're just things that have happened to MANY players in the history of the NBA.

Players sign contracts that look like good deals initially, then turn out to be terrible contracts. Remember the year Larry Sanders got his extension, and that shot chart of his opponents FG% was leaving people in awe, his deal was considered a bargain. Now what are people saying about him? How tradeable is his contract now?

Again, not saying that will happen to Lowry. Just stating what's already happened in the NBA to other players. Just a reminder of the how unpredictable some player contracts can be, for those of you that think overpaying him is fine because he could always be traded later on.

who wanted wesson gone?

dagger wrote:Whatever money argument you want to have about a Lowry deal, too much or too little or just right, keep this is mind. The cap is going to keep rising, rather fast. It's just $5m this year and may go up another $7m next year. And there is a new US National TV contract - a much fatter one - being negotiated for 2016-17. Lowry's deal is not going to sting as much as some think, even if it looks to rich up front. Key is not locking into a lot of big deals for nonstarters like Fields.

I BELIEVE that Lowry will resign since he is a very driven man and player who has always believed he was special. He wants to be the Alpha Dog and Toronto is the only team that offers him that opportunity. In Miami being 4th banana or Houston 3rd banana playing for a coach he hates. Lowry isn't a poser like Bosh he is a predator.

We will pay market price likely 4 years for $48 million with team option for a 5th.
The key as dagger says is not overpaying role players like Patterson and Vasquez.

Apparently his main man was Ennis though...

And he isn't about to lose Lowry like he did Ennis. If there's a guy he wants and he can make it happen, he will.

I guess the point I was making is sometimes he lets his man get away.

Hmm, am I your source via Sportsnet? Posted the very same info here recently. Anyway, hopefully we didn't overpay, but whatever the figures, Masai and TL said all along this is where Kyle would end up, so the numbers are ones they can live with.

Oh, and if it's a done deal, **** Miami :D

Nah man, Lowry should get 9 million tops - no way he deserves as much as Bargnani or Tyreke Evans

Pfft... Anything more than MLE and the franchise is doomed.

What happened to changing perception around the league? Lowry should be paying us for the privilege of representing dinos everywhere.

If you are happy with your role in an organization, you enjoy your coworkers, the organization is successful, your family is comfortable there & you can make the most money there...............why do you need to listen to anyone else?

Same old BS. American media want to create drama. Want to create a story. Especially when it comes to the Heat.

I desperately want LBJ to sign somewhere else. I'm tired of hearing about that team.

It would be a huge mistake for Lowry to take a significant paycut & become a role player on that Miami squad. Especially because he has been underpaid & these are his prime earning years. If Lowry believes in the management team here (everything he has said indicates he does), then it would be much more fulfilling to help build a winner here.

The other major consideration is his relationship with his teammates & management here. It's a very positive one. There is no guarantee that he would be as happy there. Especially considering his past relationships.

Grass isn't always greener. When you have something good, hold onto it.

Tony Parker $12,500,000

I think Lowry has earned the right to be above Rondo at this stage in his career. He is a comparable rebounder, generates turnovers, and is a better shooter. He is probably getting a deal starting at $12 million and going up.

....can't be serious?

Okay, I don't even think Rondo is that good, but Lowry has no right to be above or near Rondo. Rondo is a 4x all-star, NBA Champion, 2x defensive 1st team/2nd team, 1x All-NBA 3rd team, 1x NBA steals leader, 2x NBA assist leader. Then he has better career averages in basically every category (advanced and non-advanced). Plus they are the same age and have been in the league for the same amount of time.

Those players have kept a consistent all star numbers for years with the exception of Wall, but he's young which is a plus, and Kyle has only done it once in his 7 year profession. Whose to say he could match those numbers again next year. I just hate seeing us shell out this money to players who might not pan out.

Precisely. This is the root of all cap management. Pay your best players and don't overpay for your bench.

The 2 million dollar difference annually between Kyle at 12.75 and Kyle at 10.75 is a scrub of Julyan Stone-quality. That's not what will hurt us. It's overpaying bench guys by 2-2.5 mill more than they're worth that will. Bench players can be replaced cost-effectively. They can be drafted. Players like Kyle are much harder to get.

When fans can start pointing out a plethora of PGs we can easily acquire in trade or through free agency for less than 12 million per year who are Lowry-level or better I'll be in agreement that we should go after them and hold firm on Kyle. Until then, pay the man.

you have to be very cautious of giving KL a big deal..his playing style is very aggressive and there is a chance he gets injured with his wreckless style of play. Go with 11m per if not he can go.
