I'm still in disbelief that the Raptors even gave up a 1st for Thad. All you had to do was offer a pro. 2nd to SA for Thad and they would've taken that considering that they were gonna buy him out. Then slide down in the draft and accumulate future assets along the way.

What really annoys me is that it was done for cap purposes in order to avoid the luxury tax. If they had played it smart they could've flipped Dragic and Boucher's expiring deals+multiple 2nds for Josh Richardson and Doug McDermott. Sure you don't necessarily get the starting calibre big but you recirculate salary or perhaps you throw in the 1st+2nds to get Poeltl(unlikely as they wanted 2 1sts for him).
You get more scoring on the bench and balance the team overall while consolidating depth pieces/failed prospects. Another could've been Dragic+Bonga+filler+picks for Poeltl+Richardson.

My biggest gripe has to be the lack of direction the team is in. You can't compete while rebuilding/retooling at the same time. When Durant came onto the market, had the Raptors recirculated Dragic's deal into more expiring salary+capital they could've made a deal
centred around Barnes+filler+draft capital. But they were understandably worried about Durant's injury woes and they could've flipped Siakam for a monster return as he had rejuvenated himself as an all-NBA team and build the team around Barnes. Flipping Fred before his value cratered would've helped but alas.

Hoping the Raps get a top 5 pick(not betting on Wemby or even Scoot knowing the Raps history with the lotto).

I want him badly, more so when we were playing better. Still think he'd make us better at both ends even though not a floor spacer.

It's going to be frustrating to see him go and put Boston or another contender over the top

poeltl is vastly overrated on this board. if he was so good, how come the spurs want to trade him. other point is, he's a FA. are you willing to overpay to keep him in the summer cause he's looking for a payout too.

he has value as an expiring. Young plus porter for fournier plus FRP. clears cap space for knicks etc...

Exactly. One of the most mediocre, “doesn’t move the needle” player who is hugely overrated by this board.

all things considered; i'd like to keep boucher. he's on a pretty good contract that decreases over time in an increasing cap over the next couple of years. he's not particularly high iq but the team demands more of him that he can handle. if he stays in his lane of being an energy and hustle player while shooting the occasional 3 that's fine.
edit: mitchell robinson would be a good get for us; i'm not sure if hes available though.

Not disagreeing, just unsure we are better off with Richardson and McDermott. Those 2nd round picks aren't really giving us high-end talent that we need.

As for Durant, I don't think the Nets are looking for expiring. And Siakam wouldn't have much of a return with developed teams traded away their picks to tanking teams, and tanking teams won't take Siakam with their current timeline.

Not sure anything we can do better, but I prefer we acquire bad contacts for 1st round picks (or young talent that fills our need). I hope we can make better use of our expiring, rather than waiting for another team on their fire sale, because we just don't have enough assets right now.

Since Boucher is available to be traded:

OKC gets: Chris Boucher and Juancho Hernangomez

Toronto gets: Isaiah Joe and Mike Muscala

The time to get him was last summer. We'd be so much better now. Otherwise I can keep arguing Poeltl back and forth but why bother. Either Masai/Bobby get him or they don't. They get another C or they don't. Better to wait for what they actually do then analyze or complain than worry about future moves that may not happen.

Which of course applies to most things here

if he's willling to re-up with us on a boucher type contract, i'm cool with getting him. if he wants more, he can get that in free agency.

If we trade Boucher, GTJ and FVV, couldn't we clear enough cap space to sign Poeltl in FA instead of paying assets for that right?

i was upping reid on this board going back to last year. hopefully we can make a play for him that won't be too expensive. I would take Reid over poeltl 9/10 times.

I'd hope Masai would know ahead that he'd resign here, and like Del said made a consolidation trade to free space

You just answered your own question -

other point is, he's a FA. are you willing to overpay to keep him in the summer cause he's looking for a payout too. He's older than most spurs players and before paying him, you have to look for a trade to get some assets back.

Poeltl still good, but not our kind of center we need

Return to Toronto Raptors
