I'm still in disbelief that the Raptors even gave up a 1st for Thad. All you had to do was offer a pro. 2nd to SA for Thad and they would've taken that considering that they were gonna buy him out. Then slide down in the draft and accumulate future assets along the way.
What really annoys me is that it was done for cap purposes in order to avoid the luxury tax. If they had played it smart they could've flipped Dragic and Boucher's expiring deals+multiple 2nds for Josh Richardson and Doug McDermott. Sure you don't necessarily get the starting calibre big but you recirculate salary or perhaps you throw in the 1st+2nds to get Poeltl(unlikely as they wanted 2 1sts for him).
You get more scoring on the bench and balance the team overall while consolidating depth pieces/failed prospects. Another could've been Dragic+Bonga+filler+picks for Poeltl+Richardson.
My biggest gripe has to be the lack of direction the team is in. You can't compete while rebuilding/retooling at the same time. When Durant came onto the market, had the Raptors recirculated Dragic's deal into more expiring salary+capital they could've made a deal
centred around Barnes+filler+draft capital. But they were understandably worried about Durant's injury woes and they could've flipped Siakam for a monster return as he had rejuvenated himself as an all-NBA team and build the team around Barnes. Flipping Fred before his value cratered would've helped but alas.
Hoping the Raps get a top 5 pick(not betting on Wemby or even Scoot knowing the Raps history with the lotto).
