Lol you don't go from publically announcing that your pick is available for trade to promising a player weeks before the draft. It's not Toronto.

If it is Toronto, what if we take Waiters, and trade DD for Gay?

What better smokescreen than saying you don't give a damn about the pick.

Like I said, if by chance it is us - and I am not buying that it is - one of two things is happening. BC has a trade that includes DeMar. Or a team that is willing to trade with us has specified they want Waiters at the 8th pick and the Raptors with the connivance of Rob Pelinka (Waiters' agent) have shut him down.

What if the Rudy deal is changed to Demar, Davis, Calderon? We get to keep the pick. 8-)

Whether it's Gay or another trade altogether, if it were Toronto locking in Waiters so soon, there is a trade involving DeMar ready to go.

On draft night though, because if we trade him beforehand our cards are laid out on the table.

It's a lineup that shows a team can't decide what it really wants to be: win now or build for later? Especially if the PG is Nash.

If you're going after such high priced vets you probably shouldn't pair them with a couple of starting rookies.

Yeah my thoughts too. Well they haven't publicly announced the pick is available for trade but I do believe the reports that they're shopping it for a guy like gay/iggy. The raps aren't gonna make a promise to a guy if they're shopping the pick. Also I can't recall Colangelo being a guy to make these promises weeks in advance of a draft in the past. Not that Toronto won't consider Waiters but I can't see them being the team to make a promise like this

The Probasket guy didn't even reference a source, he just said we like him (Which everyone knows is true) and then someone connected the dots that a team who likes him might have a chance at giving the promise

I would put us at the bottom of the likely teams to promise Waiters at this point. I think we're way too deep in the Gay or Iggy trade talks to make a promise with that pick. Also would Waiters be that invested in a promise by a team picking 8, in Canada, with Demar Derozan at starting SG. There's probably a better chance at the promising team being Memphis than us (Maybe Waiters would love the idea of landing on a 50 W team instead of a bottomfeeder)

Doesn't sound like a good plan. I mean, I remember when BC "promised" that Brandon Knight wouldn't drop passed 5th pick. Lo and behold, situations change and the Raps draft Jonas Valanciunas.

Agreed. That lineup, especially if its Nash, would really struggle defensively too. JV is probably not going to light the world on fire right away and by the time he (hopefully) does Nash will be long gone. I don't get the Nash love in general as he'll just make us a first round exit and then we'll have to do what we're doing right now again once he leaves/retires. I think he's going to Miami anyways so its a moot point.

I could see Jose being MIA's starting PG next year ;)

Ya, and you don't think DeMar, Ed and a fair bit of cap space cant' also get you a pretty good small forward?

You're basically buying what you want to believe - that we really are pairing the pick rather than players - to get a SF. I think it's broader than that.

If the usual reliable Philly source is correct, we offered the pick plus Ed plus Jose for Iguodala and #15 which is hardly a lop sided trade. Maybe not quite enough for Philly, but it would be only one scenario. That scenario would have had Holliday moving to starting SG. But if Philly wants DeMar rather than a pick, and would prefer to keep the 15th for depth, an alternate scenario is easily arranged.

Though I am skeptical, I concede the possibility we made Waiters a promise, because worse case scenario, he's already one of the guys we're most likely interested in, so even if a trade falls through now, Waiters can come off the bench at two positions next season, then save us a fair chunk of coin on extensions for Bayless and Demar if we don't like their progress.

BC seems like a by-the-book businessman. I don't think he'd promise anyone, especially this early.

****, I hope it's not us.

Maybe it's Detroit. He seems like a Detroit type of player.

Trading for Gay/Iggy is a win now move. The last thing they would want is ANOTHER rookie coming in in place of DD who is already familiar with the system and is 3 years into his development.
