This is confusing to me.

We appear to have a forum that is bitterly divided over the direction of the team. Not only are there pro- and anti-tankers, but there is disagreement over the actual direction that Masai is taking.

What gives?

One possibility is that those who believe we are tanking represent a much smaller minority than they appear. That seems less likely to me.

More likely is the odd situation where both sides are approving of Masai's performance based on the belief that he is following their preferred path. One side looks at the words and the actions and hears "tank" and the other side hears those same words and thinks "playoffs".

This is somewhat analogous to when Barack Obama was elected. A lot of people saw him as a moderate with a very centrist economic vision who would work to bridge the political divide. Others saw him as the savior of the left who would undo all the evils of the Bush Administration.

Until reality sets in, people tend to want to see what they want to see.

That certainly seems to be the case here so far.

MU has not showed clearly which way he's leaning and contrary to what most anti-tankers seem to think, the people for tanking are rather patient. Until he makes a clear move in one direction or the other I don't foresee a whole lot of change to the approval rating over the next coming weeks.

There simply has not been anything groundbreaking enough to warrant people having strong feelings.

See I'd agree with you. Except he's been talking about "2 year plans" and believing in karma as a reason against tanking. At some point someone has to ask when do we say time is up for this grace period of Ujiri?

To me, I'm open minded. Ujiri can prove me wrong and I'll gladly admit he was right. But I still disapprove of his overall vision as it stands.

He's also hinted at having no issues making a major trade, so much as it's not us getting the shaft. I'm sure if a nice trade came along to get rid of some of our core (KL,RG,DD) he would do it and embrace the tank. As is, he is simply playing it by ear which is a tad dangerous. It has however only been a month or so, so I feel I can't really complain about him too much. I will however be disappointed if we go into the new season with our current roster.

I'd say our problem was mainly 3pt shooting, teamplay and perimeter defense.

3pt shooting is getting addressed, thats good, but teamplay is not - we do not have ball distributor (forced Lowry into the role and it didnt work so naturally would need a second PG to be like that but instead we get Stone and Byucks neither of whom are good at creating for the others and orchestrating a good teamplay). Perimeter defense is still problematic but that much is given with Lowry gambles and DD's I-do-no-defense approach, but we have Stone so maybe he will bring something.

Until he touches the starting lineup, his vision is difficult to get a hold of. That's possibly the reason why there has been limited fluctuation.

In the east where teams are moving to get better, possibly standing pat IS a tank job? Or could changing coaches, hoping for internal development, and signing hard-assed defensive guys be a sign he thinks there is a chance of competing with current core?

Also, we've hit something with the Tankers definition of "treadmill team". Anything that is not a dynasty is a treadmill. A 50 win team that is not a top 3 favorite to win the Championship is a treadmill. Can't really see how they will ever be happy, but whatever.

I think the answer depends on which side of the fence you sit on.

If you are pro tank then the moves to date have been disappointing.

If you wanted to give the current roster an opportunity to compete, I think most of us thought at the end of the season the Raps needed to address:

Getting depth at the four with defense and rebounding.
Getting a back up point that isn't a chucker and can play defense.
Getting three point shooting
Getting rid of Bargs
Getting draft picks

He's done all of the above without spending a whole lot of money or long term contracts so I think the latter camp should be happy.

That said if the roster doesn't work out then he's in a position to do a fire sale and tank. It will be interesting to see the rating at mid season

New poll in place for July 17-19

I am going to try to help the Mods by using the same thread for these polls - you can see the results of past polls in the OP.

Although the approval rating overall did not move much between the first and second poll, there was a notable shift from "Strongly Approve" to "Approve". I am curious to see if that trend continues in this thread or if some of the recent moves will start to balance things out a bit more.

Since the last poll, here is what has been done:

- finalized the Tyler Hansbrough signing
- signed Dwight Buycks
- amnestied Linas Kleiza
- bought out Marcus Camby
