The type of Reffing to expect in the playoffs

Post#41 » by SHAQ ATTACK » Thu Apr 17, 2014 7:55 pm

Came across this video and realized the ref who made this ridiculous call is none other than Tony Brothers. A few posters mentioned he always screws the raptors when hes reffing our games. Lets just hope the league places him elsewhere otherwise the series is over lol.

In an NBA first, the referee crew for the Raptors-Nets series have already called 8 fouls against the Raptors 2 days before the game.

Anonymous NBA exec has informed me that Amir Johnson is expected to foul out before tip-off.

In unrelated news, ESPN has already received the dates for the Heat-Nets series from the league office.

This is easily my biggest concern heading into this series,

I hope casey isn't mincing any words and is telling his team flat out that they're gonna get screwed and they just have to play harder to make up for it.

I don't know about it happening to Lowry, but look for it to happen to JV.

Think back to the first 20 after the trade. Who were the first two fouls almost always called on? Yup.

I think this is how it works; somebody call Mayweather and tell him to bet on Brooklyn.

2nd actually. You know whos 3rd in most fouls committed? OKC. You know whos top 10 in the league in FTA? The Raptors. You know whos also top 10 in FTA? OKC. The Nets commit the 9th most fouls in the league. You guys just try twisting things towards your narrative.

The refs do call tick tacky calls against us but they have also done that against teams we've faced. I've seen with my own eyes, Raptors get lazy, start coasting and reach in to much. Ill reserve my judgment for the refs when I see the job they do. You guys need to chill until then, seriously.

When it comes to analyzing refereeing you simply cannot rely on looking at only aggregate stats and comparing teams. That tells you very little that's useful.

As we all know all too well, refs can influence a game well beyond the points given or taken away from calling offensive or defensive fouls.

The biggest impact of calls is shifting momentum in the game. A key defender gets their 2nd foul call early in the 2nd quarter or their 5th foul mid-4th quarter. The player is substituted out or has to play more carefully and less aggressively. This opens the game up for the opposition and improves their offensive efficiency. The impact of this goes well beyond the FT's earned, or the additional time put on a shot-clock etc. Suddenly an 8-4 run resulting in a 4 point lead turns into a 3 point deficit.

Be on the lookout for the game context of a foul call. You'll start to see patterns emerge and this for me is what I find the most frustrating.

Nets gave up 24.7 FT attempts per game, shot 24.4 per game (-0.3)
Raps gave up 25.3 FT attempts per game, shot 25.1 per game (-0.2)

Both teams were relatively equal during the regular season in terms how many FT's they got vs they gave up. During their head to head games this year, FT's were close as well.

FT attempts should be very equal in this series, if you go by thee regular season results.

People seem to forget that this is the playoffs. In the playoffs unlike the regular season only the best teams play, this goes for refs as well only the best refs get to ref I'm not worried about reffing.

Uh, do you watch much NBA basketball? There is a business agenda which influences the officiating, that's just the way it is. The OP is right on all fronts.

Most of the time, this anti Raps refs talk is pure gibberish.

Agreed in the series Nets had more fouls called against them they are older and slower.

Didn't I tell you guys about these refs? You guys thought that I really was losing it. This is how the refs act in the playoffs. The Raptors got outplayed, the game would've been closer if these refs didn't assist Brooklyn throughout the game. Brooklyn probably would've still won the game.

Based on the eye test I thought the reffing was pretty good. I thought they called some ticky tack crap on Ross which really hurt us because of his defense on JJ, but overall I didn't really find myself yelling at the TV in regards to the refs.
