With Lowry and I Ibaka exipiring we have cap to get a second star.

With Kawhi we could actually attract a second star.

So the cap upcoming cap is the biggest reason for him to stay. The genius self-destruct mechanism engineered by Ujiri.

And this is a very fair question. As much as I believe the current roster is finals bound Kawhi doesn't just want to get there. He wants to win.

This is really it. The Raptors have to deal with Delon's extension, and Norm's salary, but otherwise the books are clean for 2020. I'm not sure if it would be enough for a max slot for a guy in Davis' range if Leonard is included, but they should be close.

The only way this play really makes sense long-term is if you bring in a second star to transition post-Lowry.

The way the roster is constructed there is a ton of length on this team and a lot of dudes that pride themselves on their defence. Not only that Nurse is going to create a fun offence and if the vibes are good we can put shoot a lot of teams from 3. Im especially excited to see what Kawhi can do in the clutch

He needs to commit before we make any moves to appease him.

And trading Lowry instead of Derozan would have been a terrible idea. Lowry is a much better player on a shorter contract.

Cap space in 2020 , we should have enough to add another max player and all our younger players. This roster/team is in a good position.

I've done the math. They can certainly have the cap space for another max slot in 2020 even with Powell, Leonard's max, and a reasonable extension for Wright (plus OG's rookie scale deal) on the books. Can fit Siakam's cap hold in there too, plus another 6 or 7 million in salary. Can almost fit FVV's cap hold in there - ideally the Raptors manage to move off of Norm's contract, and they can do this:

FVV
Wright
Leonard
OG
Siakam
Anthony Davis
2020 1st round pick
Room MLE signing
Minimum signings to fill out roster

There is some potential that if, say, the market is a bit suppressed on Lowry or JV or Miles or even Serge, that they take a one year deal for cheap, knowing that an impressive season would see the team regain their Bird Rights at the end of the year and make them eligible for a significant raise.

Well we have Siakam, first off.

Secondly, we have another shot with Lowry, Gasol, Ibaka, Green back.

Thirdly, we have Lowry, Ibaka, Gasol all expiring at the end of next year.

Lastely, we have Ujiri.

It’s just funny to me when this discussion was had in the off season we had such a dark look at the situation (I should say many of our more team neutral “fans” did).

Now we have a young star in Siakam, who perfectly compliments Kawhi’s game.

My concern is that this team has a 1 year window and there is no way in hell that he stays without another star in their prime. Lowry is old and overrated and outside of him there isn't an allstar on this team who Kahwi can grow beside or would want to.Why would Kahwi sign long term when Lowry is 32 and getting worse every year? I would have been a lot more comfortable trading Lowry rather than Derozan for many reasons but it is what it is and Ujiri basically has to get a guy like Butler or AD or he's leaving.

Sign an 1+1 deal then.

Whether Kyle stays or not...no big deal.

Pascal as a budding all star is a huge plus and we know they can coexist.

We still have a good stable of young guys like Fred and Norm with good contracts. I'm curious to see if OG makes a Pascal-like leap in year 3...and I am willing to give him a pass for a lackluster year 2 after all that he has gone through...losing his dad suddenly, concussions and appendectomy. Give him a summer and see if he makes becomes a great 6th man or trade bait.

Bottom line...Kawhi's has to trust Masai to build a winner with what he has...and that is on Masai to convince him.

Absolutely no way someone with a chronic injury like Kawhi's signs a 1 & 1.
