I kinda get it. Usually when you’re good at what you do, you get promoted. So for an example in a company a really good manager gets promoted to a VP or something like that.

You saying Brad is really good at what he does hence he shouldn’t get a promotion is actually kind of flawed. There’s probably things he’s already done in the background like scouting and attending board meetings etc to set him up for this role.

Stevens isn't a top 5 coach. :)

Isn’t that what Pat Riley did, or am I remembering wrong?

So if Masai bolts MLSE step up to the plate! Sixers bombed last year and got Morey and Doc. I guess that is their take on accountability in a bubble and Covid Olympics. Thank gawd we didn't do 7-11 like the Celts. Maybe Brown and Tatum are the new Marner and Matthews. Crowned stars far too early.

don't insult Tatum and Brown like that. These guys have had playoff success. Celtics still have stars at premium positions. Just gota find the right pieces around them. Danny Ainge doesn't seem like the guy given his moves over the past few years. a shake up could be a blessing if they play their cards right.

I knew this might be the explanation, but corporate ladder doesn't translate here because positions in most companies have a salary cap for each position. For instance, you can't have a VP making more than the CEO, etc. However, NBA coaches can be rewarded via an extension with a higher salary and it's pretty common for the coach to make more then the GM, which is interesting because in terms of position status, traditionally the GM is considered the higher position, expecially considering the GM can hire/fire the coach, but the vice versa can't be carried out.

I actually think Brad could end up being a good executive. He was a very good coach. The transition doesn't always work out, but he's as good a candidate as any for the Celtics right now.

Ainge is responsible for his own downfall. They had opportunities on multiple occasions to trade for a star and he always overvalued his assets.

I am baffled by the Stevens move, though. He seems like a coach to me, not a front office guy. He’s also a dang good coach and isn’t old. I’m also not blaming him at all for what the Celtics have not accomplished because that roster is poorly designed and Brown was hurt. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that’s a temporary move and he ends up back in coaching as soon as next year.

Going from Ainge/Stevens to Stevens/Who Knows is going to be a downgrade.

I feel like this is firing Ainge without actually firing Ainge. We’ll see if he actually “retires”.

Well that's something that can be argued both ways because it's hard to quantify exact ranking, but most believe he is one of the best coaches in the league.

Someone on twitter suggested Stackhouse as the new coach.

I'd be very conflicted about that. I hate the C's, but love Stackhouse. But it's a great idea.

Still waiting on Chauncey getting his chance as a head coach. Would rather it not be the Celtics tho cause I think he’s actually be a great coach

For some reason people don't seem to get how its possible Ainge could get fired.

I'll put it this way. You get four or five kicks at the can and no matter how good you are, you can't get over the hump. At some point it's the coach or GM that needs to go. Brad Stevens is too good, you want to keep him. Basically, Ainge is Dwayne Casey in his coach of the year season, he has to go for the team to try to get over the hump. Ainge had countless opportunities to try and do that and didn't do it. Just as Casey did without any effort at change.

So he's toast.

You cannot keep a GM that obviously has such a low risk tolerance, when you're close.

I thought Ainge's best skill was exploiting the incompetence of other GMs. First, in 2007, he frisked the T-Wolves of prime Kevin Garnett for a pooh pooh platter of guys including Al Jefferson, who would go on to be good about a decade later after moving around the West. Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and Ryan Gomes were either salary ballast or never added up to much. Now, he did give the Wolves back a first rounder that could have been impactful - it become the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft, but they used two back to back picks to take Jonny Flynn (bust) and Ricky Rubio, who stayed overseas for a couple of seasons and never reached the full potential people thought he had. They managed to pass on Stephon Curry and DeMar in the process.

Several years later, Ainge peddled Pierce and Garnett to the Nets, which yielded a whole lot of good stuff like Tatum and Brown via high picks. Thank Billy King for that.

I thought Zarren was next in line for pres role. Celts board seems to love him.
