Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread
Maybe him and Barnes can motivate each other, Barnes is already ascending to heights and maybe that can help sharpen the blade. Reportedly he's a workaholic, gym rat. This could be good.

Signed with team T.W.O for the 2022-23 2023-24 2024-25 season.

He’s going to benefit from not being expected to be a primary or secondary scoring option.

Quickley was the key piece of the deal for the Raps, but RJ as the filler contract, it could've been a lot worse than him.
I am super excited for both. Sad to see OG go but this was my favourite outcome out of all the rumoured OG trades.

Both when to Montverde Academy though never cross paths as Barnes joined in 2019 and RJ left in 2018, but there's a bit of connection.

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread
I think people are going to like RJ once they actually see him play vs. assuming how he plays.
You can already tell by the number of people calling him a chucker when he near exclusively takes 70% of FGAs from 0-10 FT off drives and cuts, another 27% from 3, and avoids long 2s and off balance mid-range Js like the plague.
He needs to finish better at the rim and make drives more physical to at least get FTs out of it.
The guy gives a **** about basketball and has always been about the team, true since U17 days to the NBA. Some people were hanging the FIBA loss to Brazil on RJ when no one including the coaching staff showed up for that game. You don't get nearly as far as that team did without RJ, who averaged 17 for the tournament behind SGA and was outstanding every game from QFs to the end.
RJ might not be underrated but for sure he is and has been underappreciated.

I'm not sure how this is the case when he was clearly behind Brunson and Randle as a scoring option too.

He was 1A/1B for his first two years and I feel like that may have hurt his development.

We can develop him further. He'll benefit from playing with Barnes, as well. He's only 23.
I mean GTJ has been pretty trashy recently. I really question the value of a guy who's value is in scoring and is pretty much the worst volume scorer in recent nba history, probably playin on a team with some of the worst spacing in history (not like it's been that much better in NY though).

Let's playin for 9th!

I see a lot of similarities with how people reacted after we got McDaniels, and I see a lot of people who will be disappointed again.

Props TZ!

If you’re honestly comparing McDaniels to Barrett in any way shape or form I’m sorry man but I can’t trust your basketball evaluation skills. McDaniels was trash from the get go. Barrett was a top 3 pick for a reason. He has game. Has he reached his potential, no. But 10 times the player McDaniels is in his sleep. McDaniels is barely an nba player. Barrett actually has nba level skills.

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread
RJ’s always been kind of intriguing to me because he routinely toasts us whenever we play the Knicks. But you look at his numbers and it’s awful. But good speed/first step, shooting mechanics, footwork, okay handle, size, I don’t get what’s up with him? We obviously want to see what he’s got, but I hope they are prepared to lower his role and minutes if he continues to be trash.

Barrett has been a year over year negative player who hasnt improved since his 2nd year in the league. Sometimes, a change of scenery opens things up for a player, but im not sure how a guy who cant defend and cant shoot is a good fit with our best player

He’s also 23 and has skills that actually can translate into improvement… it’s **** weird to me how when we traded Powell for Gary Trent everyone was on Trent’s nuts acting like he had so much potential when it was obvious to me he was a one dimensional chucker, and then we trade for a guy 23 who was. Former top 3 pick who actually has a much more refined and versatile skillset with. Some semblance of actual basketball iq and people are dumping on him for efficiency acting like he can’t get better. I’m sorry I tried to be nice but you guys honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.

I wasn't comparing their games, I was comparing the way people expected McDaniels to come in and be good. Same way people think that RJ is going to be a good addition to the team, and not like he's salary filler.
Rj is going to come in, shoot horrendously and be inefficient as he has every single year of his career, the dude AVERAGES a 51.8% TS%. People hated FVV, boy oh boy they are going to LOATHE him.
RJ is currently 167 out of 200 qualifying players for TS%.
Too many people commenting about his inclusion in the trade, and how he's going to be a "good running mate with Scottie" don't watch knicks/non raps games. And they are in for a rude awakening when they see him play.

Props TZ!

RJ Barrett has started 296 games including on a playoff team last year. Acting like he is not going to come in and give us good minutes is just ridiculous.
No one is expecting him to be a superstar but sheesh, you act like he is a massive negative player. His contract might be an overpay, but he still will be at worst the 6th/7th best guy we got (Barnes - Siakam - Quickley - GTJ - Poeltl - Schroder - Barrett). We have been trotting out like 5 NBA caliber guys a game previously - RJ is an NBA rotational player.
