Re: Masai Ujiri says Goodbye to Toronto
Masai is a Raptor for life. I consider three people to be in that category: Masai, Kyle, and DeMar. And I view them as such for the same reason. They transformed Toronto from just another NBA city into a place to be that has a real identity and culture. Carter brought excitement and Bosh was solid, but neither tapped into the immense potential of Toronto.
DeMar started the process through his loyalty. It was just in his nature. I’m pretty sure he would’ve shown the same intense loyalty to whatever organization drafted him, but it was the Raps who picked him, so we are the one’s that benefited from his loyalty. He was the first player that truly integrated Toronto and the Raptors into his own identity.
Lowry’s place on this list is obvious. He is our current all-timer. He brought an intense passion, but I think this passion got channeled into Toronto because of the influence of DeMar and Masai. Loyalty was important to Lowry. He wanted a family. DeMar provided that loyalty and sense of family. Belief and winning were also important to Lowry. Masai brought these elements. And this allowed Lowry to embrace being a Raptor and unleash his passion.
But Masai truly was the person that recognized the full potential of Toronto and the Raptors. DeMar was intensely loyal, but I don’t think he fully understood the potential, at least not before Masai. Lowry was passionate, but needed nudging to understand the possibilities. But Masai knew of the immense opportunity in Toronto right from the start and his belief brought it to life.
Yes, we needed Kawhi to win the championship, but I don’t consider him a Rap for life, because he didn’t build the identify and culture. Masai, Lowry, and DeMar did (oh, and Larry T!!! Can’t forget about him. He is actually the Raps GOAT. So I guess I have four Raps for life).
The only part of the video that caught me off guard was Masia stating he still dreams of a second championship. I’d be a bit surprised if he joins another team, not because he is still committed to the Raps in some psychic way, but because I get the sense that once he experiences a bit of space from the game, he is going to choose to pursue even bigger things than basketball championships.
Masai brought us our first championship, but even more importantly he saw the potential in the Raps and built an identity and culture that believes it is possible to achieve big things in Toronto. I think he’s going to do something similar in the future on a stage much bigger than that of any single NBA franchise.

Just speculating based on the video but from the sound of it he could have some involvement with the Tempo. I can see him in some sort of advisory role, maybe even in scouting.

That would be cool if he helped get the Tempo up and running.

Hearing him say 'you will win again in Toronto' at the end made me sad

Masai brought Toronto from the laughing stock of the league to a world class organization.
I don't know how to even express my disappointment with ownership, he should have had a blank cheque for as long as he wanted to be our President. This hurts more than Kawhi leaving and it sours my outlook on the Raptors future.

This is above and beyond.. I can't believe Raptors are losing a man like this. I swear to god if he becomes president of the Tempo, I'm gonna start watching WNBA. Tempo is owned by the Larry Tanenbaum group so there's no stupid Rogers in the way.

Can we edit the video into the OP and pin this thread for the year?

What a class act. Also loved that he put the clip of the BLM paper on the team bus, because I think that was reported as something Ed hated.
