Re: Official CBA/Labour Talks Discussion Thread II
I have to think they did make some season changes. I think squeezing the games back has been a NBA strategy. It provides the players with the 180 million they were giving up with the BRi difference, owners get their revenue too, so they aren't refunding games, and maybe this combined with a move to 51.5 of BRI, allows union to agree to some system changed. the NB had done a good job taking the debate from what the players wanted vs what the owners wanted to what the owners wanted vs what the owners may be willing to accept. Either way, owners have won the battle this time, i guess we'll just see to what degree, and what they were willing to relax on in order to get there. My hope is they relax in the BRI and hold strong to system changes, but I'm skeptical given what was discussed and the order they discussed things. Also at the same time, while you want to see changes to the system to improve things, you never really know if what get's done is going to work they way you want it. I've said a real hard tax, with no wiggle room also takes away our advantage as a profitable market, and our ability to over pay, which, unfortunately we've needed to compete on the FA market. Also, rookies getting out of rookie scale deals earlier is not really good for us, so I hope that wasn't one of the concessions. regardless, will learn more about it all soon I'm sure. I'm just excited about the prospect of hoops coming back. Only so many times I can watch Paul and Sherm talk about Larry Bird and the Atlanta bench.

even crappy tank ball better than no ball....
With injuries and whatnot. Not a good idea. I guess it's a bone for the NBA to throw to the players......that they can play a whole season and collect their full salaries.
I just don't like the idea of coming back with essentially the same system.
And worst thing is, both owners and players are holding their own position, instead of improving competition. Having longer contract length and holding on a lockout for money won't get us parity.

The song remains the same.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

There are several things that cannot be fudged on accounting statements. Salaries, cost of utilities, maintenance, security, costs of buying equipment, supplies, etc. Some things can be interpreted different ways and the accountants would know what those things are. The players accountants looked at all these things and agreed that the league is losing money.
Your idea that the league is only losing a meagre amount or even zero money is just based on feelings.

I've already detailed several things other than "feelings" that lend some credence to the idea that the league did not lose $300 million last season, and that it is has not been in extreme financial difficulty over the course of the most recent CBA.

If you're talking about your post on the previous page it reads like a pretty good conspiracy theory.

I suppose this is more than feelings, as compare to NHL or other related projects.
Also, 5 times the inflation rate on other expenses are questionable.
True, if I am the accountants, I would agree the league is losing money, but how many of them are necessary expenses, that is the question. Just like eHealth, paying a contractor at $100,000 a month, did any accounting say it is wrong? No, that is the contract the eHealth offered, and eHealth claimed they need that contractor.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner! The owners are conspiring to shift money from the players to themselves. Just like MLB in 2000:

Everything old is new again. A fool and his money are soon parted. One born every minute.

It's a well known fact that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

You're right. What was I thinking? Why would the owners want hundreds of millions dollars more? NBA owners couldn't possibly be like MLB owners.

Signs of labor optimism: Team execs cancelling scouting trips, preparing for free agency. Agents quietly reaching out to teams on players.
Must not get excited...

Is the meeting over? Started at 2:00pm EST right?
Ajinca fits the Raptors' mold as a skilled player from Europe, but has never shown any signs of succeeding at the NBA level

No, it's ongoing as far as I know -- none of the many reporters stationed at the hotel have indicated anything about it being over.

This might actually be the biggest disappointment if they come out with no progress.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

The union was waiting on its economist to return for talks on revenue split (BRI). His presence is a little less vital on system issues.
The two sides have been meeting for seven hours now in New York, and expected to go deep into the night again.
There's been significant progress on the luxury tax, but league sources say that there's still a couple of sticking points left to work out.

In a surprise, the labor meeting has ended after 7.5 hours.
Hmm not sure to read this, probably not good...

I have to think this is a good sign
