Re: With the 45th pick, the Raptors select Jamal Shead
I am still high on Shead even though nothing really stood out in SL.
His 3 point shot looked good. That was a big thing for me.
i think it's going to be a bit of an adjustment for him coming from the NCAA to the NBA. The competition is faster and longer. The whistle is different.......he won't be able to.play as physical on the defensive side.
He does have to figure out how to shoot 36% or better from 3 in the NBA or it will be a struggle for him. I think he can get there. It will be interesting following his development journey this season..

Shead Year 1 is a practice pest who will improve Quickley’s game.
The way that Shead gets NBA playing time is by extending his 3pt shooting to waay out, improving his passing, and finishing at the rim.
If he can do those 3 things, he’s an NBA player. Otherwise he’s a practice player.

At least one NBA executive seems to be pretty high on Toronto Raptors second-round pick Jamal Shead ahead of his rookie season.
The 22-year-old point guard was one of nine players who received a vote as the rookie expected to be the biggest steal in this year's draft, according to ESPN's latest poll of NBA executives. Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo polled 20 executives during Summer League earlier this month and one voted Shead as most likely to be a draft steal.
Bub Carrington of the Washington Wizards received the most votes with five to be the most likely draft steal. The point guard out of Pittsburgh was selected 14th overall late last month.
Miami's No. 15 pick Kel'el Ware and Minnesota's No. 27 pick Terrence Shannon Jr. each received three votes. Chicago's No. 11 pick Matas Buzelis and Utah's No. 32 pick Kyle Filipowski received two votes.

I still think our pick would’ve been ware if he had dropped to us.
Glad that shead is getting some love.
I believe in Masai.

Re: With the 45th pick, the Raptors select Jamal Shead
I genuinely believe he should be ahead of Mitchell in the rotation.
His hustle & intensity is infectious. You can see he really puts team first and tries to be a real floor general. I’m NOT saying he’s Lowry 2.0 but there’s some similar intangibles. Unless his jumper really falters, I’m guessing it improves, I think he’s gonna end up a fan favourite in that vein..

His playmaking stood out to me which surprised me. Nice little push shots as well.

I think Mitchell is destined to be traded at the deadline to open up space for just that. I think he is destined to be traded regardless.

I think there can be room for both if the system is so predicated on ball pressure. You can see how high our pick-up points were on defense yesterday. Darko wants disruption but I am not sure if IQ and Barrett can manage that as starters.
I think mixing in Mitchell with the starters is going to happen eventually, and having two PG bench line-ups is also interesting, especially with Mitchell who might be better in an offball shooting role.
What we saw last night was brief, but we saw a different type of defensive team. I would not even leave Carton out of the mix because he looks NBA ready.

Yeah, Mitchell needs to get paid next season.
If Shead shows promise, trade Mitchell.
If Shead needs work, get him reps.
Shead’s progress is inversely correlated to Mitchell’s tenure.

Really liked his finishing at the basket. He knows where he can get his shot off. Anyone that skilled has work ethic and the shot will get better. How much better is the question now.
The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.
The bad thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

Both probably are gonna get minutes. Our starting lineup still needs a POA defender so if Davion was starting that really would not surprise me.Dalek wrote:Johnny Bball wrote:PhilBlackson wrote:I genuinely believe he should be ahead of Mitchell in the rotation.

I was thinking the same. That type of defense = a lot of energy. It also means some games there will be fout trouble. Having 2 PG's on the bench that can put that kind of pressure on ball handlers is a lxury. Darko should be able to play the same style of aggressive defense most of the game. I am hoping the Raptors are annoying as hell to play against.
I also think Shead puts pressure on the other 2 PG's to match his energy.
He's got some Lowry & JYD in him. Love players like that. He's already my favorite player to watch on the floor. Hopefully Darko encourages him to keep it up.
I think he should be with the club most of the time while also playing some.905 games while on homestands.

I think there is room for both, depending on the price obviously.
IQ is a combo guard and that gives us a bunch of flexibility. Can see Davion sharing the court a bunch beside IQ, especially if/when we trade Brown. They complement each other well, even if it does get a little too small in the back court. For example, I'd love to see IQ/Mitchell/Barrett/Scottie/Kelly share the court.
Our guard depth chart right now is IQ, Dick, Mitchell, Brown, Shead, Walter. At minimum, you hope 2 of Mitchell, Shead, and Walter stick.

I'm not sure Mitchell is going to get very much next season and not sure he's going to get more than current. Not sure why anyone would. But he needs to play, that will be his biggest concern.
Or maybe he finally balls out.
