It's a 2 year deal too, don't think I've seen that for a 2-way deal.

Not bad given his age. I think that's 15 guarantees headed to camp now.

It's been at 15 for a while. 2-ways don't take up a roster spot.

No room for JFL at this point. Wonder why they're still keeping his contract.

Masai must have been worried someone else might draft/sign him even though only a few picks left in the 2nd round. A million bucks to get your guy.

July 23 is the next date where JFL will get $150K more guaranteed unless they drop him so my guess is they'll waive him after the SL unless he becomes summer league MJ. If they still like him, they'll eat the $150K and invite him to training camp and Oct 22 is the next date to guarantee $800K...then Jan 10/25 is the date where his $1.9M is fully guaranteed.

You can't carry 16 players though right? So they have to make a decision by the time the season starts.

It keeps him under the Raptors umbrella, and the 905 can be completely geared towards him.

Anyone on Assignment will get great experience with him.

I've been a vocal skeptic of Chomche as a prospect, but I respect that FO went out and got their guy. I hope I'm proven wrong. Doing this also demonstrates that the team has stakes in his development, which is a good thing for Chomche and ups the chances of success.

But three two-ways are allowed above the 16 man roster. So we have one spot left.

DJ Carton and Branden Carlson have the other 2 spots.

I mean its a low risk high upside play. You lock in a kid with alot of raw potential and if he doesn't pan out its only a very late 2nd round gamble.

I don't get why anyone would be upset with the choice. Not saying you btw.

That would have been the reasoning behind drafting him versus signing him as a UDFA. Maybe they just wanted to get the player and then have some options on what to do. Seems likely that they had some internal debate which would explain why his deal took so much longer than everyone else's to complete.

Maybe someone was coming to get him in that 57th spot so who knows. But they bought the pick a few slots before Chomche was announced so I think that's unlikely.

I agree, probably wanted the optionality. Maybe they were also trying to get another player in on a 2-way and when that fell apart, just decided to give it to Chomche instead.

If you let Chomche go undrafted, he can select from multiple teams / offers. The Raps would just be one of likely many teams to be interested.

The Raps see potential with him and they paid a pretty small price to gain control over the situation.

That's not usually how it works. There's no real pick sniping at the end of the draft. When it gets that late, agents are matching their players up with their preferred fit and will tell other teams not to draft them. It's the player picking the team at that point.

You can tell teams not to draft them, but teams don't have to listen.

If Klutch told Masai not to draft Chomche, I doubt he would draft him. Especially if his team thought they could get him a regular contract. Teams won't take money out of a player's pocket, just a bad look.

But totally plausible that he could have had multiple teams interested that he was willing to sign for if he became an FA, and drafting him meant we can get the 2 year 2 way as opposed to a standard 1 year 2 way to give them more run room.

I'm interested to see how he looks against other prospects in the Summer League. If it's not a complete disaster he might be playable towards the end of the season although I strongly doubt it.
