which is really stupid but probably true. such a fluke injury and id rather it happen in an organized game with US officials and trainers and medical people rather than an LA pro-am

Some news out of PanAm presser today (per Wolstat and Hoops Hype):

1) roster down to 15 as Pierre is unable to be there due to academic issue at Dayton;
2) Bennett and Bhullar are in the best shape Triano has even seen them;
3) English late to arrive due to travel issues (fogged in in Nfld), but is there now.

after playing really well in limited minutes last year, powell is killing the summer league. averaging 22 and 11, and showing some 3 pt shooting. i havent watched the games, seems like hes shooting a lot, but Im guessing if the coaches had a problem with that theyd probably sit him down. Pangos had a good bounceback game too, 12 6 and 5 shooting 2 for 3 form 3 and 50% overall

Some other comments on summer league:

* Dwight Powell seem to be playing fairly well. The Mavs are really trying to force him into a stretch 4 role behind Dirk. 12 threes taken in one game! He has the green light to shoot from deep, but he better improve that 25 3Pt% or the green light will be gone in the regular season. He also still seems a little soft with rebounding and defense - hopefully he can bulk-up, toughen up in the next year or two. His rebounding rate needs to improve - he seems like a soft 6'11.
* Olivier Hanlan seems really off...just bad. Jazz boards posters seem to have given up on him already. Some say he may not even get a camp invite.
* I liked this joke over on the Mavs SB Nation board. "Kevin Pangos has the shortest arms in professional basketball history. He needs a hockey stick to scratch his balls." I laughed...but it is serious problem for Pangos. I don't know who he defends at the NBA level. Summer League guys seem to be abusing him. But he seems to be playing fairly well on the other side of the ball. I can't see him being a better 3rd string PG for the Mavs over Raymond Felton - probably a much cheaper option though.
* Sounds like Khem Birch has a contract in Turkey he will be heading towards. He didn't get as much run as I was hoping for in these summer league games so far. His stats didn't seem to stand out much. I really thought he was NBA bound this year - there is still a chance I suppose.
* Brady Heslip didn't get much run in the first couple games - I hope he sees more PT to show what he can do.
* Lyles has seemed ok so far, nothing spectacular...

So far not really a great summer league for the Canadian kids.

No, just a random thought.

Would Murray or Joseph be primary ball handler on the NT?

What? Consensus from who? Murray can't be better right now than Anderson....no way.
If Murray is starting there would need to be some politics going on.

12 picks in the last 5 years. Half of them lottery. We'd never had more than 3 NBA guys on the team at once. Golden Age indeed. Jamal Murray you're up next.

There's been a Canadian in the lotto every year the past 5 except 2012 when Nicholson went in the teens.

Also the GTA needs more credit in this as a bball hotbed. People look and see Canada is producing players when 90% of them are from the same area. That needs to be brought up more. We don't look at guys from Oakland as "California players" they're part of the oakland legacy

Are you talking now? If so, there is no question. Cojo is a far better player and Murray won't likely be on the SMNT (Aug/Sept). What is going on now (next week) is the PanAm games team, more of a developmental team (Yes, there are some vets mixed in). And I would still be shocked if Murray was getting more playing time than Jermaine Anderson.

If you are talking 2-3 years from now - it is more debatable but I'll still say Cojo.

I agree. There is no way that Murray is better than Anderson right now. I like Murray a lot, but I think people are overestimating how good he is now.
That being said, it would not completely surprise me if Murray started - PanAm results are meaningless and playing time may be influenced by factors other than maximizing chances of winning these games.

Hoopshype puts the Hype in Canadian Hoops. The TMZ of Canadian Basketball if you ask me.
My guess is the "consensus" is of three people - Hoopshype, Slippery Cal and Murray.

I don't know how anyone could know that? Even 3 years out is speculating.
Murray is so young...Sometimes I don't think people appreciate how much development happens from 18 to 22.
Take Myck Kabongo for example - 5 years ago people here were certain he was a sure fire lottery pick , the next Steve Nash and would be starting for the SMNT at 20 (same thing with Cadougan before him). Things happen...some guys unexpectedly develop or don't develop. Injuries happen and the hype machine is strong with young guys.
Cojo is a known quantity, is good now, is getting better every year and is currently the best Canadian point guard (with lots of room to get better).
You didn't even ask about Tyler Ennis.... a year ago, he was the next great point guard. He still could be - but why are people talking about Murray over Ennis at this point? Ennis still has a ways to go to get to Cojo's level and Murray even farther. Murray may not even be a PG - he sure has competition for ball handling duties at UK. Regardless, it will be fun to watch him develop this year in Lexington.

Calipari posting selfies of him and "his sons"....

Add in his other son, Lyles, and you can quickly figure out who's the "father of Canadian basketball..." lol. Or at least The Godfather!
Is anybody here a marine biologist?

Canada is the next international basketball powerhouse

Post#459 » by zgall1 » Tue Jul 14, 2015 5:10 pm

What do you guys think? Is there merit to the argument that Canada is about to arrive on the international basketball scene?

Definitely. I don't see any reason why we can't be.

Even now, the only team a full-strength (i.e. with Wiggins, TT, etc.; not like the Pan Am roster) team Canada should be scared of is team USA. Its disappointing to see how badly the national team has performed in some of the previous year.
