"Players are taxed for away games in each they play " from BBS22 above. Is this true? So visiting players pay Ontario or Canada taxes when they play the Raptors?

I hate these dumb bets, but I’ll legit fly a Raptors logo all year if he’s right.

Not that I have a rooting interest, but Dame himself hinted on IG live he expects to be on the Heat by Oct 3 tonight. So yeah, gonna take Lillard’s word over … *checks notes* random dude on the internet.

I only know US tax law, but as someone who lives in one state but works for a company in another state, I only pay tax laws of the state I live in.

This idea that you have to pay taxes for games played in CA seems nutty, but is gov / tax related, so I can’t discount it. I would hope the NBA has something figured out to make this easier on players, or at least covers the tax professional fees.

Oh, I can see that being Masai's plan. I just think OKC has way more to offer the Bucks who would be in a complete rebuild mode (so more interested in OKC's wealth of young talent and picks), and also Giannis would have the chance to play with Shai, who is already nearing top 5 status in the league.

If Giannis requested a trade to a specific location I could see MIL actually granting it because Giannis actually brought them a championship and I could not see them wanting to kill that relationship.

Dame has made demands like he has won an MVP and Title for Portland. Giannis is one of very few guys who actually has the pull to go where he wants.

If Giannis is asking the Bucks to move him because he wants a better chance to win a championship, I don’t see how he passes up a chance to play with Shai, and on a team that has such a wealth of assets they can easily build a contender around the two.

Yep. Currently in the midst of my CPA and have ample experience in tax and audit.

There are treaties between the USA and Canada regarding taxation.

Looooot of misconceptions about how tax works for athletes (well, tax in general to be honest)

Thats my point. They can go for all 3 and getting one increases their chances of getting the other two!

Shai is 25, Giannis is 28 and Dame is 33. Why waste assets on Dame, when their window to compete will be later. Save the assets to throw at Milwaukee, because all they really need is the pairing of Shai and Giannis, and then build around that duo with great complimentary players.

OKC can only pay so much out in salaries, and both Shai and Giannis will be on supermax deals. Even GSW is dumping salary (Poole) because of the new CBA.

OKC will be the poster child for the new CBA. 2 supermax salaries, and supporting players all around :D

OG is being traded before giannis becomes available. he's going to be traded or free agent.

It's called the jock tax and it's a US thing where income earned by a non-resident of the state must pay income taxes to the state where income is earned - this applies to American athletes playing games in Canada because Canada isn't a state (country) where the player is registered as a resident. A player residing in NYC will owe LA jock tax (~13%) per game cheque for each game played in LA.

We don't have a jock tax in Canada so NHLers don't pay the applicable income tax rates for different provinces they visit, and when they play games in US states they are exempt from the jock tax in states where a treaty exists, or they pay the jock tax and claim it as a foreign tax credit (kind of like how Canadians/Americans are taxed on casino winnings but as a Canadian you can file to reclaim the taxes withheld when back in Canada).

Lillard and Siakam is enough to be a playoff team. Adding in a break out player like Barnes and we're looking at a contender. I think Siakam is better than 2019 Lowry, and Lillard could match Kawhi. Then the rest of the cast is great from Poeltl, Schroder, Trent, and OPJ. We have a lot of players that could be strong contributors to a championship run.

No Lillard cannot be Kawhi.

Kawhi literally took over the game at both ends of the floor. Most impressive is when he decided to take over game 6 vs Milwaukee, and punished them at both ends topping it off with a massive dunk and crown over Giannis. Lillard could NEVER do that.

He can't create for himself or others, and I'm not sure how he fixes that because he doesn't have much skill (e.g. handles, passing) and his balance with the ball in his hands is really bad (leading to more turnovers than assists). If you can get a player of Dame's caliber for a package where OG is the main piece, I think that's a no-brainer.

It comes down to the fact that every team in the NBA wants 3&D guys, and OG is maybe the best 3&D guy in the game (Bridges also has a case).

You're right about his offensive limitations in other aspects of his game though.

ya, I don't think teams are interested in OG based on what he can be. They're interested in what he already is, which is an all-defensive caliber player who can guard 1-5 and hit 3s at a good clip. Those skills alone have tremendous value, especially for a contending team that need support players for their superstars.

Contending team, yes. I don't see why Portland would want him on a rebuilding team, especially since he wouldn't be an exciting flashy scorer type. And given his contract status

The whole clown show that is the last 48 hours serves as a reminder that this is an entertainment business first and foremost. It only further cements my stance that he's on the Heat this weekend. Some of these "leaks" are getting ridiculous now.

I think OG would be a seamless fit on POR because they desperately need defense and shooting around Scoot/Sharpe. OG also fits their timeline since he's still only 26.

In terms of money, with Lillard gone, they need to spend their money on someone.

Are Toronto, Chicago & Milwaukee all trying to help Portland extort more assets from Miami?

I am sure they would all like to have Damian Lillard play for their teams.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

They're all autobahn clicks.

Spoiler:
i.e. - Not many playoff games.

And ffs, the guy only JUST turned 33. Doesn't turn 34 until next summer. Hell, Lowry looked decent in the Finals at age 37.

I just don't understand how MIA thinks they can pivot and offer the same assets for better players like Giannis and Luka.

This is their chance to land a top 15 player by basically giving up only depth assets. Other organizations are better positioned to make much better offers for players like Giannis, Luka, Embiid if they come on the market.

Lillard is still great but his price is reduced due to salary/age reasons and MIA should take advantage of this quickly.

I like Jovic and Vasquez. I’m luke warm on Herro.

None of those guys are main parts in a giannis or Doncic trade. They’ll have to deal Bam

There has been so much chatter about Raps being front runners, but little about Dame talking to Raps management. I feel like this would really be the key towards a dealing even happening. It should be pretty simple. Raps and Blazers have a deal in principle. Toronto gets a call with Dame and his people. Either go or no go. Not sure what’s the hold up. Also don’t see anything from Drake. He is normally all over this stuff and would drop some cookie crumbs or comments.

One of the best things the Raps have in their favor is that Herro is a terrible fit on the Blazers with Scoot/Sharpe/Simons. So unless either MIA or POR can flip him instantly for an asset or two, POR basically views him as just a large filler contract.

Return to Toronto Raptors
