Adter reading this I have only 1 question...
Why wasn't our pick top 10 protected in the Poeltl trade?.....My God...Once you see the odds of retaining the pick its obvious San Antonio did the math before the trade and Toronto did not

The Front office expected we'd be way better off this season. So to get then deal done sooner, we make make it top 6 protected, before someone offered San Antonio more.

I wonder what the next best offer was though.

I think we must have outbid ourselves. Who else was offering a top 6 protected first and 2 2nds from a lottery team? We weren't even in a playoff position at the time of the trade. No way anyone would have exceeded that value for an expiring Jakob Poeltl. For reference, we traded our franchise player in Pascal Siakam for a lesser package than what we gave up to the Spurs for Peoltl. Lol

I mean possibly but I doubt the Raptors have anyone who would fit that role.

I mean… Poeltl

That would be the only one I could remotely see but not sure Grizz would want to go that direction after moving on from Adams.

Seems incredibly unlikely. MEM dumped Adams for salary reasons. Bringing in Poeltl would likely push MEM into the tax next year.

There is also the question of what value they would give up for Poeltl? They dumped Adams for what is looking like picks 38 and 58 in this years draft + HOU's 2nd in 2025. So basically 2 decent 2nds for Adams, a player of the same ilk as Poeltl.

If MEM were interested in a big body C wouldn't they have just kept Adams, who make less money than Poeltl? And even if they want Poeltl is there any way they give up something comparable to the '24/25 pick we gave up for him? I'd guess since they just valued Adams at 2 2nds they aren't going to value Poeltl at a top-15 1st.

Put me down as someone who thinks the Poeltl market is probably pretty dry and getting back anything close to what we gave up for him in a trade is highly unlikely.

Because they were delusional and thought we would be a playoff team with that core. They thought the pick would be like 17-20 range and undervalued the protections. I’m just happy there is any protection at all.

I'd probably rather trade #7 this year instead of (what will probably be) #11 next year. I'm not super excited about anyone outside of (what I consider to be) the top 4. So losing out on someone like Bezelis, Holland or Filipowski doesn't exactly break my heart. Heck, I wouldn't be shocked if we get #6 this year and try to trade it to the Spurs so we can get next year's pick back.

Im thinking we’re a bottom 8 team both years and they will try their best to keep both.

Part of the reason for the return was dumping Birch's contract. That was worth at least one 2nd rounder and probably split the difference in value for the second one between that and Poeltl.

We need to be actively trying to out tank the Blazers, who are also looking to compete. This front office really messed up by not considering the odds and putting their best foot forward for the tank. We should have traded Poeltl at the deadline to get worse. I still agree with the Agbaji trade, there's a fair chance we can increase his value and get more than a late pick.

I mean this is ignoring that the 2024 draft apparently sucks and maybe we preferred conveying a pick in the 7-15 range if we sucked (like we do) over being stuck in 2025 again.

I am speculating that there is other reasons why the pick is only top6 protected

-Raptors were around 6 worse to 10 worse is the days leading to Trade Deadline 2023

-Raptors didn’t want to give their 2023 pick. They preferred to give pick in 2024

San Antonio probably wanted to make sure the pick convey . Probably didn’t want the pick to drag to much or worse case never convey and fetch second rounders

SA probably request top6 protections

That Bobby/Masai probably were fine because they were expecting us to be much better in 2024. And because the draft is also less good , they were fine with pick conveying on 2024.

I will argue that Raptors having the 6th or 7th worse rankings is likely the reason the pick is only top 6 protected .

SA probably foresee that us being in that very position was a possibility.

I am less sure Raptors FO taught the same .

That boneheaded play at the end of the Bucks game is an example of a poorly coached team. And of course Doc is going to blame the players...
