Sucks that these games aren’t available to watch on TSN or CBC or some other type of channel that most Canadians have access to.

Anyone know if T. Scrubb is injured? Best in the lineup instead of him.

Another nice win - solid showing by pretty much everyone that played. This is a fun team to root for and one that will only get better in the years ahead. Be nice to get an upset in one of the later games today, but regardless we are very well positioned to qualify, just need to take care of business in September and then see where we're at.

Bennett was brutal. That guy does not know how to forget the last play if he makes a mistake.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
So apparently the 2 games in September are must win games because we won’t have our best players available for Nov/Feb where we would run into both Brazil and Venezuela which would be heavy favorites against Canada without NBA players. This is such a tough road either way. But if we can get into the WC. The Olympics would actually be much easier to qualify for.

Wins from Bahamas and/or Chile would be greatly appreciated tonight - Brazil has already made short work of Colombia.

Bahamas with 5 turnovers in the last minute and change of the 4th, along with 2 missed FTs, but somehow hang on to beat DR 83-82.
So now only a 3-way tie at 5-1, with Canada, Brazil, and Venezuela.
DR 4-2
VI 2-4
Columbia 1-5

Great news - Bahamas wins in what was almost a massive choke job at the end. Shout out to Buddy Hield and the boys for giving it 100% despite being eliminated coming into the game. Not as good for us as Brazil or Venezuela losing but every game helps in the second round.
Also, Canada Basketball management very rarely (if ever) gets any love from this board however the first half of this summer has so far been a success on the Men's side. U-18 Silver, 2 30+ blowout Qualifying wins (with solid turnout), and a great start to the U-17s.
All that is left is to secure two more wins in September (need a big win vs Brazil) with a little more turnout (Murray, Thompson, Pangos attendance).

Credit to the Bahamas on that win they played with passion and pride even after being eliminated. That lose will ruin the Dominican Republic FIBA ranking.

In five years Kelly Olynyk is still going to be the best player on the national team. Barrett looks like an NBA player though.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread
It seems like the WC berth is all but guaranteed. Ignoring Brazil and Venezuela for a minute, the DR will need to win two more games than CA in the remaining six games, which seems virtually impossible given that we should put up an NBA roster in September and have two remaining games against a fairly weak Chile. And even if we somehow manage to finish fourth, our points differential is so overwhelmingly better than anyone else, that it should guarantee qualification if we're in a tie with a team from the other group.
So it's now interesting to look ahead and examine the qualifying system for the 2020 Olympics.
Seemingly, things look simple: Japan, the host, will qualify along with the seven best teams from the 2019 WC. The other four teams will come from a last-chance tournament including 4 groups of 6 teams each (24 altogether), with the winner of each group qualifying.
So does that mean a top-7 seed in the WC guarantees us a spot in the Olympics? Well, not quite. The system has a wrinkle -- it includes a clause on what FIBA names "universality", that is ensuring that each continent is represented. How do they do this? The best-ranked team from Asia, Africa, and Oceania will qualify automatically. Then there will be two qualifiers from Europe and two from the Americas.
In other words, in theory, we could win the bronze in the WC and still not qualify to the Olympics if the US wins gold and another American team sneaks into the finals game. Conversely, we could bomb and not even make it to the quarterfinals, but if the other American teams also do badly, we could still have a spot in the Olympics.
To an extent, this system puts us in a bit of a disadvantage, since the US is such a force that it would be almost impossible to finish ahead of them. But then, I think if we come with our best team we're clearly better than any other American team and should be able to clinch the spot. It's probably the European teams that are most damaged by this system. France, Serbia, Spain, Lythuania, Slovenia, Greece and the others will all be fighting over two spots.

The only frustrating thing about the next round is that we have to play Venezuela twice without our NBA/Euroleague players. The Brazil game in September is likely the most important game for us to win with the A-Team as we also need a good PD for the potential tie-break. Like you said, Chile should be a gimme in September and February leaving us to try to snag at least 1 off of Brazil (December) and Venezuela (2x) to guarantee a birth - beating Brazil again would guarantee it while beating Venezuela once would put us in favorable condition to clinch outright.

Where do we have to play them? I hope it in the US and not somewhere where they speak Spanish.

Definitely not the US. We will likely get to play Venezuela/Brazil/Chile once each at home and once each in their respective countries. I'm actually kind of hoping the September game with Brazil is in Canada as we cannot afford to drop both of our games with them - rather have the NBA guys playing with home court.
