Just as long as the guy we pick is not a win-now coach, I'll be happy. Gotta be a good X's and O's guy and excellent at development.

Bingo. Aaron Rose at SI is saying Scariolo is pulling away as clear favourite.
That guy isn't connected to the FO, just more aimless tea leaf reading.

Kevin Young - former HC candidate but he has now returned to Phoenix to be an assistant
Kevin Young wasn't going to jump ship to Toronto for the same job. The Raptors appear to be retaining Hines, so no need for Cassell. Not sure about Borrego, but looks like he took a position with a vulnerable HC as a vulture assistant. Not happening here with a brand new hire.
There's an endless supply of assistants. The new HC will likely have a list of preferred staffers, and then management will supply some names of their own.

That Stein report just says Serge isn't interviewing IN Toronto this week, he's obviously still interviewing (via zoom) this week. I agree though, we'll have our coach by the end of the week imo

Reeko wrote:Why are so many opposed to Scariolo? Is it because that at his advanced age of 62, it would signal that he's not interested in developing young players and that he expects to compete immediately? Meaning that management will likely make an effort to keep the core intact?
Are we being fair or are we being ageists? How do we know that Sergio doesn't want to come in and develop young players? How do we know that Jordi and Darko do? Despite their reputations as excellent development coaches, maybe they want to go to a situation where they can be viewed as winners and not simply as developmental place holders.
It's likely being subconsciously ageist. Based on Masai's season ending PC, the new coach will be mandated to play the young players and bench more.

Dalek wrote:Some analyst put it best in that Toronto interviewing so many candidates means they get like 15 different scouting reports for the team, assuming they ask how coaches would play their team or construct the roster to benefit key players. It is all good intel to have.
It is weird that Scariolo's interview got moved to be a Skype call rather than in-person. They knew the playoff schedule for his team, so I think something must have come up because it seems like a less serious approach to him.
The rumors about Kenny Atkinson interviewing recently could be the reason but it seems strange that he wouldn't have been shortlisted earlier and that he hasn't been a definitive choice. I just think with Bob Myers gone, you could see Steve Kerr take his role and create an opening for KA to step in. Toronto's dithering is going to cost them options.
HC candidates or assistant coach options are drying up:
Sam Cassell went to Boston - would have been a great player development coach
James Borrego went to New Orleans - a really interesting young coach who could have been an option
Kevin Young - former HC candidate but he has now returned to Phoenix to be an assistant
It’s possible that Atkinson deep in the Milwaukee process did not want to open the dialogue originally but circle back to Raptors after the Bucks choose Griffin.
It’s reading Tea Leave at this point but I agree that the rumors about Kenny Atkinson could be connected.
I still think that Sergio is somewhat the favourite here but the changes in the Interview is strange.
One reason could be that Toronto already knows they want him and don’t think it’s reasonable for him to travel.
Still hoping for Fernandez

I dont know how u bring back FVV at $28-$30M... it just doesnt make any sense for where we are at and where we want to go. The 2nd luxury tax comes into play in 25'

I could listen to Windhorst for hours because he is making everything so interesting
Thanks for sharing this clip.
I am assuming the rumours about the raptors coach is Scariolo.
The interesting is also that he is saying that FVV going to be on the market. We knew he was not going to opt-in his option. But this sounds like FVV is gone. Maybe i am reading too much.
The next 4 weeks are going to be interesting .
We are at a cross road.

Windhorst is lying. Fred rejected the offer last off-season. Klutch has been shut right out of the Raptors FO and so Windhorst is left with nothing but speculation.

Check out the Virtus Bologna roster. Lots of NBA players. Teodosic. Udoh. Bellinelli. Nicki Mannion.
Belli could shoot. Teodosic was good but always on the shelf. Udoh had one or two ok season but no offence.

Oh was this forum anything but? Who should I be listening to? Doug on Bobcat's basement show?
"The 62-year-old former Raptors assistant had been expected to fly to Toronto for a final interview with the organization this week, but the success of his Virtus Bologna in Italy has reportedly postponed those plans, per Marc Stein. Bologna is scheduled to compete in the Series A championship against Milano beginning Friday."
Coming to Toronto likely means hanging around for a Masai on-message presser.

They made an informal offer to discuss the extension and he said not now, which is why it got out to the media here. Two beat writers aren't going to just make up that story out of thin air. Fred was responding to the idea that he pushed a contract away.

Thats how I'm reading it. He could have signed it if he wanted it. It worked out for us that he didnt

I'm more reacting to Windhorst claiming that the Raptors hedged last off-season. It's spin that fits his narrative. Klutch is obviously pissed that Masai won't say whether he'll compete for Fred this summer or not.
