other than being not black, i don't see how the two of them are similar players at all.

Bingo. It always amazes me how much the race of player influences the judgment process. I still remember every pundit were going Larry Bird hype on Keith Van Horn, Van Horn thought himself as more of a Derrick McKey. That threw everybody off since McKey was...well not white.
