Then he'd better have a reason to believe that we will get Durant, rather than cap space and a vague belief that it'd be awfully nice if we got Durant.

POLL: Masai Ujiri Approval Rating - Mid-Season Poll

Post#62 » by Rapsfan07 » Wed Jan 22, 2014 2:15 am

Strongly disapprove.

Just like Colangelo, Masai has shown us in his short time here that he either lacks the intelligence or the balls to make a commitment one way or the other. When MU and TL got here, they talked all this mess about not wanting to be in "no man's land" and just making the playoffs is not acceptable and the long term outlook of the team etc and now we are exactly where they said we wouldn't be. We're not elite or even good and we're not terrible. We're not tanking and we're not contending. We are in basketball purgatory.

Masai phucked up when he decided he was going to go with the wait and see approach or a attempt to rebuild on the fly. The CEO of MLSE have him free reign AND a FIVE YEAR contract meaning that he has more than enough room and time to rebuild this thing properly. TL obviously didn't believe in Colangelo's core or else he wouldn't have fired him and hired Ujiri, he would have just kept BC to finish the job. Instead Ujiri wasted time when he actually should have started clearing house as soon as he got there.

Now we have a middling team and our best player is a UFA next year and could easily walk for nothing. He has devalued our 2014 pick and on top of that, there is still no star on this team. Now we are going to be rolling the dice on even smaller odds of landing a star either late in the draft, ripping someone off in a trade or luring someone in via FA. He had all the incentive, leverage and support to build us into a future contender and has instead settled for a treadmill team.

All he had to do this year was package Gay and Lowry for picks/prospects, buy low on cheap young talent and pick well in the draft and we could have been on our way in 2016 when the all-star comes. He had everything he needs to build this properly and instead he copped out.

He gets credit for dumping Gay and Bargs but that's it. He really isn't very different than BC .

Yeah I agree with you. I'll admit that I was off the pro tank but I am starting to feel again that we should be tanking... I am starting to see this team treadmilling. I don't know what is going to happen. Would Durant come to Toronto with Drake here??

He has and continues to have my approval.

All the whiners about BC's knee jerk moves and know those same people bitching that half a season in he hasn't made more moves?
The guy was left with a HUGE mess. He got rid of two of the biggest contracts on the team without taking back negative contracts. Cleaning up BC's knee jerk mistakes like Fields isn't going to happen overnight.
He didn't make this mess and he's actually ahead of where I thought in terms of cleaning it up.
Yes the team needs a superstar but I don't know any GM that could turn what was left into a superstar.

I don't know what people are bitching about. We haven't even got to the trade deadline when most deals happen. I'm more than willing to give him till the end of next year when Fields will expire before I worry (as long as he doesn't make any BC like bonehead short term moves.

But that's the thing - he already has made "BC like bonehead moves" by not picking a direction for this team.

So many people doesn't realize that not having or not choosing a direction and sticking to it is one of the worst qualities a GM can have.

We are where we are because Masai did not commit to a direction. He always said "we'll see" or "it depends". You can't do that if you're trying to be a contender like TL and MU said they were gonna be. Sometimes you're going to have to make difficult decisions like trading Ray Allen. We need a guy who can do that.

Will he make a big splashy move this year? Who knows. Maybe the opportunity hasn't come for him yet? But I'm confident this franchise is in good hands.

I'm excited to see who he drafts this year with our 1st round pick and Sac's 2nd rounder. I think that's where he'll truly shine.

To me it's not the lack or moves but the lack of progress.

We are still saddled with a .500 (at best) team leaving us in essentially the same spot as the last decade or so. What I expected was something slightly more tangible, either do something to considerably worsen the team and reach for a top pick or make some moves to significantly better the team. Neither of those have happened.

Really?

I see my fave type of team when they play within the system.

The D can be elite
the offensive ball movement can be gorgeous
they don't often get killed on the boards
Respectable from the FT line and from 3
Our PG leads the league in charges drawn
Our PF leads the league in diving for loose balls
Our sophomores have potential on both ends of the court
We have a good bench

Best part is that unlike Bargs they all play like they care.
Worst part is they care so much they try to do things outside of their strengths and ugly play creeps in.

That's a team I will support.

Call me a treadmiller but I rather watch good basketball than no basketball and I avoid watching bad basketball.

It would appear that my initial fear that he doesn't really have a plan was right. What he's been doing was ad hoc planning which isn't really planning. I had Masai as "Neither Approve Nor Disapprove" in Oct but have changed it to Disapprove today. If he continues to suffer from Indecision Paralysis leading to 7/11 no man's land, I'm afraid "Strongly Disapprove" is just a matter of time.

This sums up my feeling well, and I also voted "Disapprove" for the first time.

Here's that report
"
For the first time, there are certifiable rumbles emanating from Toronto suggesting that the Raptors might well keep point guard Kyle Lowry for the rest of the season. Word is new GM Masai Ujiri continues to resist locking into any sort of firm position -- leaving open the possibility of a Lowry deal if the offers suddenly get sweeter -- but team officials appear to be growing increasingly comfortable with the idea that it's better to go for what would be just Toronto's third playoff berth in 13 seasons rather than try to do the absolute uber-tanking it would take from here for the 17-17 Raps to get into Andrew Wiggins range."

He has a direction it's elite D centred 4 pillars team building while maintaining flexibility and low price FA signings.

Neither disapprove or approve. I'll give him til the deadline for my decision this year. Nice transactions but I'm leery with his typical MLSE like approach. Feels similar to 2006. Taking advantage of teams trying to be bad but this time we got no Bosh. Yeah I know the team has picks and financially looks alright. But I'd like to see him build through the draft. I be apprehensive.

Well we were 2 games shy with .488 as recent as 09/10, .500 in 07/08, .573 in 06/07 and this year. So in the last 7+ years we're had 4 teams that were a game or 2 below or a few games above .500 and we've had 4 that were below .500.

And our cumilative record over the last 8 seasons has been (roughly) .436.

What point are you trying to make exactly?

Let's not reach for that excuse now, I mean, Colangelo rode that "hot in Phoenix, so it will eventually work here" excuse for many years and Phoenix was a much better team than what Masai had done with Denver. Let's talk about the Raptors, and so far it's been sub par.

Not the point...but whatever.

I'm just not exactly sure what people expected.

He got rid of our two worst contracts, added a future first rounder and at least one solid long term piece in Patterson.

IMHO that is not bad for 6 months...especially given how bad the situation he came into was.

People expected what they were promised, "escaping no man's land", and like I had mentioned earlier in the thread, getting rid of bad contracts isn't unique to Masai, other terrible GM's have done so and it certainly doesn't excuse him from wasting away an entire season. 6 months is enough time to understand this roster is incredibly flawed.
